I have owned several M1A's over the years and have always shot them for a while and then sold them.  I have never owned or shot an AR10.  Is there a difference in the recoil between the 2 systems?

ETA:  I'm talking about a standard model in both weapons.  Not NM or Heavy barreled tack drivers.  Just regular 20" barrel version of the AR10 vs. the regular 22" barrel version of the M1A.

They feel a lot different to me.  Not necessarily one has "more" force than another, but they feel completely different from a mechanical standpoint.  Hard for me to describe it, actually....

The AR-10 or most 308 ARs have a bit more recoil/kick than an AR-15, but a lot less kick than a 30-06 or a 12 gauge shotgun.

The recoil isn't bad. Maybe more recoil than a little girl would enjoy shooting, but there are also ways to tame recoil if it bothers you. For instance there are Heavy Buffers that supposedly soften recoil.

I didn't say it bothered me, I just want to know if there is a difference.

I agree with the above poster that it's "different".

To me, the M1A/M14 cycles very short and fast. It's like it's already cycled and relocked before the muzzle has stopped rising. It's kind of like a "bang -> clack -> clack" and done with no "bouncing". The stock design seems to allow the muzzle to rise significantly as well.

The 308 sized ARs cycle just like a big AR. The bolt travel is a little longer, and "bounces" at the back of the buffer. Then feeds forward and pushes the rifle forward again. Overall it seems smoother, but slower and with more back to front motion. Then with the action and operating system being inline there is less muzzle rise.

Is there a significant difference in the magnitude of the recoil? Not really. It's a gas semi-auto .308. To be they all shoot about the same (except for the HK's that like to smack me in the face).  The main difference is in the direction of the recoil. And AR likes to push nearly straight back, while the M1A wants to climb.

.308's don't kick much, I have a couple of them, one i built up, the other a POF P308 with 16" barrel, to show you how controllable the .308 is, what this video:

I have both a Springfield M1A and an AR-10

The AR 10 has less felt recoil. The difference was noticeable but not that great of a difference.

The AR 10 has less muzzle flip. This was a big difference.

accuracy however was very different. AR-10 was much more accurate.

I have a standard AR-10 20 inch barrel and a regular springfield.

BUT the springfield balanced better for off hand shooting the AR-10 was nose heavy.

Sold the Springfield, keep the AR-10

An AR in .308, especially with a HBAR, actually has little kick in comparison to a .308 bolt action. Can shoot my LR-308 all day long in comparison to my friend's .308 bolt action. Night and day diff

ar10 vs ar15, yes it is more but nothing that will bruise your shoulder. I really dont' find it bad at all...... not like a synthetic stock .308 bolt action.

the gas operation / bolt carriage and possible HBAR really takes down the kick of the .308 on the AR platform

I've never fired a Garand, but I have fired a DPMS Oracle 308 (16" barrel w/carbine length gas system) AR, as well as many other caliber rifles.  The following are the best comparisons I can give from personal experience.  Stock, I found the Ar to have slightly less recoil than a Savage Model 110 30-06 bolt action, both firing 150gr rounds.  I'm probably what most would label as moderately recoil sensitive and I was a bit surprised by how much recoil the .308 AR had.  I've fired 5.56's for years in the military and place them in the little to no recoil area, just above my 22lr rifles.  After slapping on a limbsaver and an AR-restor hydraulic buffer, I find the recoil to be much more manageable...comparable to my Marlin and Winchester lever action 30-30's with 150gr ammo.

I dunno what the deal is with the guy one hand shooting the automatic 308 in the video, that's ridiculous even if it were only a 5.56.  I DEFINITELY wouldn't suggest attempting that one handed spray with my 308...and i'm pretty sure your wrist would agree.

yea they are using some reduced loads that cycle, however my .308's don't kick much, not something i worry about, my loads out of my 458 SOCOM kick much more than my .308 loads

Tell me about it!  You should feel the recoil of my max load .45-70 Ruger #1!  It's a light .458 WinMag....
