Quick question. My son just got a dpms 308. He loosened the gas block up, not knowing what it was and slid it out a little. The gas tube pulled out a little. We just slid it back down and tightened the block back up. His friend said he has to take to a gun smith now to reset the tube. Is this true or is it fine?  Sorry I'm versed in bolt guns but not ar's yet, but I'm learning.

Thanks!

As long as it's set exactly where it was front to back & rotation wise... and was tightened down... should be good to go.

Remove the upper from the lower.

Remove the bolt carrier from the upper.

Now loosen the set screws under the gas block.

Slide the block forward an inch.  You will see one or two small "craters" where the set screws are supposed to screw in on the bottom of the barrel.

Now look inside the handguard from the front looking towards the receiver.  Ensure the gas tube is in the top hole in the rear of the handguard (the one that goes into the receiver).

Place the gas block back against the shoulder on the barrel behind the gasblock.  Move the gasblock back forward about 1mm. Tighten the rear set screw as you move the gas block back and forth and rotate it side to side.  This will ensure the set screw seats in the deepest part of the crater on the bottom of the barrel.  Once that is done make sure the rail on the gas block is level with the rail of the upper (i just eyeball it).  Tighten the other set screw.

Finished.
