As the title states - does anyone have a lead on a company that sell 'labeled' 7 or 10 round .458 Socom mags? I realize for the most part, they're essentially just 30 round .223/5.56 re-purposed mags that people use... but I just don't have confidence that this argument would fly in my state should I be questioned by a uptight LEO.

I've done a fair amount of searching and haven't come across anyone offering a purpose built .458 Socom mag kit. I'm a little weary of converting or (re-labeling) a 30round rebuild kit here in the republic of Kalifornia...as they may interpret it nonsensically as a post-ban 5.56 mag; even though my only intent would be to use it with the .458. Overall, I think it would be safer overall to just buy a purpose built & sold .458 mag from a vendor, if possible... any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

No such thing.  The .458 was specifically designed to work from unmodified 30rd 5.56 mags.  So, even if you had a mag that said .458 Socom on it, it would still work with 5.56.

are you carrying a 223 rifle with you and a 458 that could be considered constructive possession, if it's just the 458 it shouldn't be an issue, you could scribe 458/10 onto the follower or mag body if it makes you feel better.

That's a good question. But the 458 socom was designed around the AR/M-16. Thus designed to fit 223/5.56 magazines without modifications. So i think you will be hard pressed to find someone reinventing the wheel so to speak. For 458 when there is no need. That said I don't know if anyone does make a Socom mag or not.

Yea, I get what you folk are saying. I've considered buying some pro-mag rebuild kits and just replacing the base plate (which clearly delineates AR 15 .223); with a re-scribed/etched base-plate clearly stating the intended: 10round .458 SOCOM. I was just hoping that there might be someone out there that had already "reissued" the magazines as .458 specific.

@Wiki

Yes, there would be times when I might have one of my .223 or 5.56 with me at the range - which is more or less the reason I wanted something that clearly delineated their purpose i.e. (.458 only).

get a single shot follower from Midway. No way to get more than a single 5.56 round to stay in it and with some a 5.56 round will only sit on top of it, it won't hold it if you tip the mag.  This follower installs from the bottom of the mag on top of the original follower and can't be removed from the top so there's no easy way to make the mag accept 5.56 without disassembling it, but it will hold 9 or 10 .458 rounds. Some people will likely get miffed that you would modify a mag when it isn't necessary for function, but those people probably don't understand just how idiotic the legal situation is in Kalifornistan.

You could always send blank floor plates off to a laser engraver and have them burn ".458 SOCOM" on them.  Between that and the sled follower mentioned above is going to be as close as you are ever going to get to a specially marked .458 SOCOM mag.
