I'm always looking for a new project and have looked into the 5.7 upper by PDW for an AR lower I built. Thinking about building a 12" SBR with it. Have heard rumblings about banning the 5.7x28 round and guns etc. Ammo seems to be rather sparce and expensive so I'm concerned about availability. Any and all related comments welcome. Many thanks to the folks who host this forum and all you avid followers and participants.
Stay frosty.

I don't have any knowledge about 5.7 ARs but last time I was in my local gun shop we got to talking about PS90s. One of the guys I always work with at the gun shop said every time they get ammo or mags in, 4-5 middle aged dudes come in and buy everything 5.7 related - completely clean them out.
They did still have one PS90 on the shelf though.
I wouldnt mind a SBR'd PS90.

Good luck in your search for a 5.7 AR

Here's what I'm looking at –– http://www.57center.com/1.html  $695.99 – 12” SBR BBL as the upper for my project.
PS - I'm a bit beyond middlle age - just like to tinker.

Does the magazine get pretty hot during sustained fire?

I'm just in research mode right now - I have not made a purchase yet (but very close). I have not heard of any heat issues.

Hope you enjoy yours more than I enjoyed mine. I still love the 5.7 pistol, but the AR57 reminded me too much of a .22 to make it worth the price of the ammo to me.

Yep ! Ammo is my biggest worry. Thinking about this more as a 'Super Plinker' than anything - Hoping my YHM Titanium Phantom will work on it (have it for my 223).
I was looking at the 5.7 pistol also - I can see some advantages there. 'been trying to stay with just a few calibers 223, 45, 12 gauge and 22lr (the later mostly for target).

The 5.7 is a great pistol. Snag one if you find a good deal. Thanks me later.

ATF approved my YHM Titanium Phantom on 9/19 - I should be picking it up this week. PDW AR57 upper shipped today and will arrive Wednesday. Hopefully I will take the whole package out Saturday morning for a test. I'll be posting my results. I really like the idea of having a 5.7 pistol to go with the rifle - I may have to wait to see what Santa fills my stocking with

Edited:  never mind I see that you are getting the PDW upper not the one from ar57.

One thing about the short barrel upper from the factory is that it may not work with your quick detach mount.  The way the rail is cut on a slant doesn't allow the suppressor to seat all the way.  After finding out this information on the web, I ended up getting the 16" barrel version and cutting it down.  This has been a few years so they may have made the barrel longer on the sbr to take care of this problem.

Ahhhh . .  many thanks for the input - I will keep you posted regarding "fit". Since the only way to get subsonic ammo for the 5.7x28 is to reload - I may just stick to using the can on my 223. But if it fits, that will be just an added bonus. I also saw a 1' difference in barrel length between the ar57 (11") and the PDW (12") and that may (or not) make a difference. I'm a 'tinkerer' so I just may find a way to get something to work . Funny you mention cutting down a 16" - I have gotten pretty good at threading barrels in the process of tinkering - I could always sell this one and do as you have done since I have an SBR lower there should be no problem - but I will check the Rules on that. Again Thanks !

I believe Tony K arrived at 13T uppers for a SBR lower...maybe it was 14T...but at any rate you can have multiple uppers.

Also I believe YHM has said the 5.7 is a round which can be shot thru their 556 cans, either SS or Ti.

OK stand by for some field test results on the AR57 upper and YHM Phantom. The upper in on the UPS truck and "out for delivery" today. I should have my YHM Suppressor tomorrow (ATF said it  was Approved 9/19 and in the mail)

OK so here's the facts on this Upper - it is by AR57 (marked AR FiveSeven). The barrel is exactly 11.5 inched to the end of the thread. It extends just far enough beyond the Quad Rail to accept the YMH Phantom attachment. I purchased some VERY inexpensive 50 rnd mags from Botach ($9.95 each) Korean clones of the FN P90 Factory mags ( $29.99 each) they were very tight and took a bit of finishing with a fine file to get them to snap in and out smoothly. I mounted an Aimpiont T-1 on a see-thru riser. No fixed sights as yet - spent the rest of my $$$ on Ammo so that will have to wait. I really like the new Magpul folding Minis so I may have to wait a while . Saturday morning I'm off to the desert to test fire this little number. Whatch got my evaluation. And thanks again to all that provided feedback

You just cost me $1100 jaqufrost !!   I went to pick up my YHM Pahntom Ti and paperwork at the Gun Shop today and sitting there under my paperwork in the glass case was a BEAUTIFUL Five-seveN. So I thought it wouldn't hurt just to hold it. Well if felt so good in my hand I couldn't put it down. $1100 later . . .  and I'm off to the desert again tomorrow to test the AR57 Upper with the YHM Can AND my new Five-seveN.  BTW - Cabela's has 500 rounds of 40gr Vmax in a metal can for $189.99 - I went with In Store pickup and saved shipping - I bought a few cans - they are listed in the Bargin Cave and may go FAST.  Thanks again jaqufrost

Done and tested - The YHM Suppressor works perfectly - very quiet - need to create some Subsonic Ammo and test that for total Stealth effect. Ordered my reloading dies last week - got them setup in my Lee Turret press and cranked out 6 test rounds of Hornaday Vmax 40gr at lighest powder charge. Will test this week in Five-seveN and AR57 - Watch for results. Will post pics of my 5.7's soon.  No drooling - I put a SpecterDR 1-4x on the AR57 - it is PERFECT - a real Pumpkin Blaster !!.

OK so now I'm WAY into 5.7 - reloading and all. Took your advice on the Five-seveN Pistol and I love it.
Might as well jump in with both feet 'in for a dime - in for a dollar' but in this case several HUNDRED dollars

This is an early photo - since then I have changed the AR57 stock to a Magpul CTS and swaped out the sight for a SpecterDR Dual Role1-4x.
and the Five-seveN now sports a Docter RedDot mounted on one of Elite Ammo's sight rails. (I'll post new photo next time I have the camera out)

Check out BOTACH.COM –– got my upper for $549 free shipping - Delivered in 4 days !
I am VERY happy with the setup. Fun to shoot and practical combo for SHTF bugout.
Get ready to start reloading or spending a LOT of $$$$ on ammo.

. . .  and when you are ready to get REALLY crazy on the AR lower platform - check out the .410 Upper postings - I have a photo of my project there - and plenty of folks have contributed some GREAT info as well.
According to my  wife and several friends I should have no trouple going with the "Insanity Plea" should the need arise

I picked up a 5.7 upper and enjoy it greatly.  A crown royal bag around the magwell works great as a brass catcher.  It is a plinker, yes!  But than, so is the 223 round in all actuality.  As for ammo, It has been easy to find and cost no more than anything else short of 50 cal.  As for the five seven handgun, a good friend has one and his is garbage.  FNH says 1 inch group at 15 meters, but his can't do that well.  Anyone want it?

My Five-seveN shot low and right 'out-of-the-box' needed adjustmerns - I think the same guy factory sighting Sigs has a blind brother working at FNH.  I really don't trust anything "out-of-the-box" any more (really never did) - I test and reset everything to my liking - If you are going  to trust something with your life - I don't know any other way. I guess if he really has a problem he needs to resolve with Support or sell it. I don't mean rudness but "coach said a good player never blames the equipment'

Here is a Family Photo Update showing the latest mods and additions. Performed first range test on reloaded ammo - no Chrono (it's on order) but feed and function is fine (no key-holing or other erratic behavior).
I'm going to reload 6 more and test once the Chrono arrives - I started with lightest load for the 40gr Vmax. I'll post statistics once test is complete. One thing is - I don't have any shorted of empty brass

Are there multiple companies that make this upper? I've been curious about going this route myself if reloading is not that much of a problem. The biggest draw back to me is it is one more caliber.

The AR 57 was invented at Rhineland Arms (out of Texas) and developed more than a couple years (circa 2006). Rhineland Arms http://www.troupsystems.com/ar57%20history.htm did some R&D but is no longer MFG'ing.  Here is some  some research http://www.uzitalk.com/forums/showthread.php?27082-Rhineland-Arms-AR57. Military Gun Supply sold a few of them I think (that was long ago).

There are supposedly two AR57 upper manufacturers out there PAW and ATI.

57 Center  sells the PAW  (or now owns mfg rights??) and it's what you see on  http://www.57center.com/ (and also sold by others like BOTACH, etc).  Back in 2006 there were some early issues with this one – AR Center apparently resolved these issues and are selling a nice product. I personally own one (as you can see from my posts) .

As for the ATI AR57 upper – I can’t find a lot of info other that some early testing done by a few folks and that it appeared at an NRA show back in 2007.

I too was concerned about ‘yet another caliber’ to support – but all in all the 5.7x28 is a nice round for plinking (although pricey) and a good Varmint round. The AR57 upper in the shorter barrel length (12”) is a light weight straight shooter. You will definitely want to get into reloading – and there is plenty of useful info on that subject out there. I quickly became a BIG fan. I’m basically an AR fan and now have multiple uppers including a T-14 .410 Shotgun upper. I have 2 AR lowers (one is an SBR). Future plan is to get a .458 upper from RRA – but cost of ammo is holding me back on that one – it will probably get stored as an SHTF backup .
Good luck in your decision - in the end it's all personal preference AND $$$$$.
