Is there a need for another caliber in an AR ? What will the 300 black out  do the .308 won't ? Is this just to save the cost of a .308 Lower ?  Not knocking it ,but can't figure the need .

From what I've read it's a short range .30 cal round that will work on a "standard" AR upper with a barrel change. Uses 5.56 mags and bolt. Supresses well if you listen to AAC. I can't speak to that, still waiting on my dealer to get my SDN6 can in to start MY paperwork. I like shooting my 300 BLK upper (9in)

You have the option of anything from 220gr subsonic loads to 110gr 7.62x39-power loads.

The subsonics suppress well without wasting 3/4 of the case capacity like in a .308, yet still cycles the action on an AR and fits in almost any 5.56 mag.

This IS ARFCOM.....Get both!

I have an 8" 300BLK upper for my SBR. Runs on standard PMags, 20 rounders for me, cases are easily formed from cheap once fired .223 brass or any old .223 brass you have laying around. If you have a split neck on a reloaded .223 case, cut it off at the shoulder, trim down to 1.355", size and deprime, and start a second life as 300BLK brass. I primarily built it for use with subsonic loads, I loved the idea of a 208-220gr pill floating along just below the speed of sound and making a "pfft" sound coming out of my 762SD silencer. I have a bunch of 220gr SP Outlaw State Bullets loaded up that are supposed to expand below the speed of sound and intend to use them on deer this year. Furthest shot will be out to 75 yards. Also hoping to use this on feril pigs someday too!

I have a .308 AR that will also wear my 762SD silencer and take deer....but its major overkill inside of 100yards and just not as much fun to carry around.

I would say that 300 Blackout is definitely a purpose built cartridge with capabilites in supersonic loads....just none I was really that interested in using it for over 5.56 or .308.

Im really looking forward to reading more about this cartridge, and am tempted to pick one up.  I would really like a straight up comparison of supersonic loads in 300 BLK vs. 556 (velocity at certain ranges, bullet drop, expansion, etc.) but have not seen one yet (or am looking in the wrong places).

1. Be small
2. Be efficient out of a 8-10" barrel
3. Be 556 parts compatible

They both have a role but think the 300BLK should excel (over the 308) in HD role and suppressed fun.

Ok I see how someone would want it . Me I'll stick to the 556 for the small short range stuff and .308 for the rest . I had a 6.8 and sold it ,guess I'm just not ready for the cartridge of the month club yet .

300BLK SBRs provide more energy and do not belch fireballs (efficient).  Substantial benefits in CQB role.  I bet this will have serious staying power and will be a good chunk of AR sales in another 12-18 months.  Try shooting steel with suppressed 220 grain subs before you dismiss it.

The 300 WTF is an excellent suppressed subsonic caliber.  I have been shooting the caliber for a couple years and rarely shoot supersonics.  For me, there are better choices in my arsenal (6.8 and .308) when my needs/wants demand something supersonic.  It makes the cartridge more versatile in that it can shoot supers fairly well but it really shines in the suppressed/sub category.

I'm drinking the Kool-Aid

I already have an AR in 5.56 and .308 so it's natural to me to combine the two and make 300 AAC Blackout.  I like the idea of a lightweight semi, reusing AR15 30rd mags/parts and Brass.  I plan to use it for target shooting and hunting deer and elk at 300yds or less.

Like Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD, I think 300 AAC Blackout will be well received and become the standard for 7.62x3_ AR platform.  Ordered the CMMG Barrel from MidwayUSA to start the build.

What bullet/load have you decided on to hunt out to 300 yards?

I'm going to take my Noveske Rogue Hunter 300 Blackout loaded with 110gr Barnes TTSX and my Noveske Recon 6.8spc loaded with 100gr Accubonds over east hunting next month.  Hope to use one to shoot my buck and if possible have my buddy shoot the other for his.

I've been having great fun with my 300 BLK this year, but then again I've been using my 30 Cal can on it. I do plan to shoot a deer with some supersonic ammo come this fall though.

I have a CMMG .300 Blackout upper for my Armalite. So far it runs well with 220 gr Remington factory subsonic loads, but the accuracy at100 yards is only 3-4 inch groups, which is not what I had in mind. I'm going to try some 220 matchkings, and quality dies, and see how it groups then.

Anyone have any accuracy suggestions?

I did buy it mainly for HD, possibly later on with a can.

OutlawStateBullets.com has a 220gr bullet that is supposed to expand below the speed of sound. I ordered 100 bullets from them and have them loaded up for deer season this year.

As for accuracy, the factory Remington stuff is plinking ammo IMO......so far my loads using 208gr AMAX and 220gr SMK have yielded MOA or under groups at 50 yards. I've only shot steel beyond there since I only intend for this gun to be used inside 60-70 yards. Anything I would shoot further than that, and I'm taking a longer barreled .223 upper or my CMMG .308.    Accuracy with the Outlaw bullets was 1-1.25 MOA at 50 yards with rounds touching or tearing a slightly wider hole.....which surprised me.    I'm wanting to shoot a few water jugs and some wet phone books to see how the bullets acts.

What bullet/load have you decided on to hunt out to 300 yards?

I'm thinking about using a Nosler Balistic Tip 125gr Spitzer.  300yds if I lob them . Honestly, 100 to 150yds is the max range I'm expecting as I will be hunting in a well-wooded area and like that the round drop off quickly to limit overshoot

For most supersonic bullets I have found 300 yards is where the drop really start occurring. I have shot out to 500 yards but the hold over is about 2 times greater than going from 0-300 yards.

I have found that subsonic starts it big drop at around 180 to 210 yards. I have shot out to 300 yards with the subs but it was harder to hit the target at that range than shooting the supers out to 500.

I live in Salem Oregon ..My self and one of my buddies both have uppers built by Kevin the gunsmith at Ole;s Gunshop...I have to tell you they rock. Both uppers shoot <1moa. Mine is 1x10" twist so it doesn't like bullets bigger than 190gr but my friends is 1x8" and it rocks anything we put down range.
I have had Kevin build a Howa bolt into a whisper for me with a 1x8" bull that is the most accurate rifle I have ever fired!

If your thinking of going with 300 blackout/whisper you wont be sorry!!

Readily available cheap brass, more efficient case loads, and subsonic loads were enough to get me to order a barrel.
