Has anyone ever tried a 17 caliber variant (such as 17 Remington) in the AR?

Could this work in a gas gun?

Alexander Arms makes a 17 HMR.

.17 Remington i built up.  24" Shilen barrel.  Only a couple of hundred rounds down the tube (not exactly a round you want to rapid fire) but running 100% so far.  It wears an A2 stock now and a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-12x42 FFP scope.  Shoots about 1" at 100 yards with factory Remington 25 grain HP.

I made about fifteen uppers in 17 Remington back in 2003 or so.  I also made one in 17 Tactical, which is pretty much a .204 ruger necked down to 17.
I also made 3 or 4 in 17 Mach IV.

I built one in 17 Fireball AR –– shoots like a champ but I only use a 5 round magazine. This fireball is a bit shorter than a 17 Remington and I'm not sure if they would shift out of place under recoil if a 20 round magazine were fully loaded with them –– I never tried it.

I assembled this .17 Rem upper quite a few years ago using an Olympic Arms barrel at 19.5".  It was made on a medium contour blank.  REALLY accurate.

Just curious why you want a 17 instead of a 20?  Seems like ammo for the 17 would be tougher to find.

.17 Fireball is pretty easy to find.  I have yet to see .17 Remington or .204 Ruger anywhere.  But the internet makes everything easy to find, reloading makes it even easier.

I load my own ammo –– never bought any commercial ammo for the .17 Fireball.
