So a does LR  AP4 308 carbine really need a $100 buffer to maximum its preformance?

With the carbine gas system on the AP4, I'd say that it sure couldn't hurt, but may not be necessary.

I've been running a standard DPMS carbine buffer and a $27 Superior Shooting Systems flatwire spring in my rifle
length 308C (with a UBR), and it's been 100% reliable and cycles smoothly.  It ran just fine with the stock DPMS spring also, but
I wanted to see if the SSS would smooth it out any.

It did, but not by much.

Performance, not really, life span?   More mass will help it last longer.

You have several options, and the $100 buffer is just one.

Carrier weights: from the fancy one from Tubb, to a simple chunk of steel which slips in the the back of the carrier.   They add mass and thats the goal.   I got one for less than $20 shipped off the EE.

AR-10 buffer tube:   they are 5/8" longer than AR-15 sized, and so allow you to use a standard sized AR-15 carbine H3 buffer rather than the stubby DPMS buffer.  The additional length allows one more tungsten weight in the buffer, and so increases the mass.  Also, you can use a 9mm buffer which has more mass.   The tubes run $20- $30, and then a carbine sized buffer.

The stock system will work, if your happy with it, then shoot it quit worrying.   While the light stubby buffer system may not last as long as something heavier, both will out last the barrel, so...

Let me put it this way.

I have "several" of the DPMS LR-308s.

I bought another one that the guy had put carbine buffer from Slash in, and within 10 rounds of shooting the new one, I was placing an order for the other rifles with Slash.

I liked the rifles before, and I love them now.

The $100 for it from Slash is money WELL spent.
