Hello friends,
I am considering purchasing or buildng a DPMS LR-308 with a 24in SS barrel. Does anyone here have any advice, comments, criticisms, or otherwise regarding this weapon? I have read reviews and they have been pretty favorable. I would love to hear from you. Michael L. Peveto Nashville, TN |
| I have one. It shoots great, is accurate with good ammo, is reliable, better if you use pmags, but the one thing I will say is that it is HEAVY!!!!! Unless you are shooting long, long distances, look to get a DPMS with a 18" barrel. Overall DPMS are a great bargin for what you pay for them, some guys turn there noses up to them, but unless money isn't an object you will definately get some good bang(no pun intended) for your buck. |

Peveto Nashville, TN if your intent is getting a high velocity up to long distances( like 400 to 500 yds), then the longer the barrel, the more you can squeeze out of velocity , provided you do some reloading so you can choose slower burning powders. mine is a 18 inche dpms sass, and my goal was to get solid hits at ipsc targets at 700 to 800 yds all day, and i get that from an 18 inch so , if velocity is what you are looking for, then you got yourself a good head start, accuracy is more of a "good barrel" build which i think dpms make very good barrels i have a 18 inch Mark 12 (223 cal) and that also shoot 1/2 moa all day. so it really depnds what your goal is. my sass and mark 12 are all SS coated with a black coat which i did care much off. |

I agree and have pretty much the same experience with the my 5.56mm Mark 12 barrel and my 308 DPMS SASS barrel. I have a 24" barrel on my Creedmoor, and it is REALLY HEAVY. It is also the most accurate gun I own, but I don't think barrel length has anything to do with that. |

If weight is a concern, try a Remington R-25. I bought one recently and have been happy with it thus far. It groups at 1 moa with my jinky reloads (mixed brass). Only about 2 moa with SA surplus.
It isn't very tacticool, but that'll change once I get it re-finished, the barrel threaded and a flash-hider installed. |

Buying would be cheaper than building for the .308 platform. There is no Mil-Spec standard like you have with the 5.56 so customizing can be a challenge but doable.

Do you find the wieght to be a problem or distracting? I do shoot very long distance so I tend to bench most shots or at least sandbag them. I have an a3 type 24" DPMS with a fairly large scope on it. With a full mag and the el cheapo bipod I have I'm looking at 15 pounds. Solid 13+ without the pod. It was always intended to be a bench rest rig so after getting it to the bench the wieght is a nice thing. While I still can't quite stay in the scope after a shot it does not jump enough to require much adjustment for the next shot. With a good load its very accurate and pretty pleasant to shoot. |

Hey that looks like my fulton

There are lots of other better (or perceived to be better) options, but for $1,000 and change a
DPMS is hard to beat. The stock triggers blow chunks, so plan to replace it, or send it off to Bill Springfield. Secondly, they've changed their upper receiver height to match up with their own FF quad rails. This lower height doesn't match up properly with quad rails from any other manufacturers. It didn't cause any issues with my 308 that's got a DD LIte 12.0, but isn't cosmetically ideal. One option is to replace the upper with one from Fulton Armory. My 24" bull barrel'd DPMS is chambered in 260, and is really comfortable to shoot cause it weighs so much. For a bench gun, it's great, but I'm sure I'll be sending it off to ADCO to have the barrel reprofiled, threaded, and possibly shortened to 22 or so inches. The work they did to my 308 was top notch, and it had no affect on accuracy. Grizz |
| I picked up my 16" AP4 three days ago. Its in a million pieces at the moment but overall its awesome. When I get her put back together I can spend some quality time with it. Waiting on a DD rail, a shitload of magpul stuff and a bcm gunfigher charging handle<––––gotta have part imo. |

Sums it up. If you want to haul it out to the boonies its's heavy. If you want to drive it to the firing line its a dream. |

Another option here that I've just built is DPMS 308 platform in 260 Remington. The ballistics are better than 308 Win. Weight is similar to 308 (perhaps more as the steel that is bored out is less It was pretty easy to build, I purchased the barrel from DPMS, got it within the week. Still haven't shot it though, weather is kinda random in the North West ![]() For hunting/expedition I built an SPR profile 18" 308, I haven't weighed it, but it's noticeably less than the DPMS SASS 308 rifle a buddy owns. |
