I'm thinking about putting a 6.8SPC upper on my lower I just built. I'm researching into the caliber and everything and a question popped into my head. I put a standard A2 stock on my lower, with a full rifle recoil buffer. With the heavier grain bullets of 6.8spc will I need to buy a heavier recoil buffer and spring?

Thanks for the help

Your already about as heavy as you can get...rifle buffer is over 5 ounces. The carbine buffers, H, H2, etc are lighter. Your fine...

6.8 SPC is meant to use standard carbine buffer, but I don't think you'll have problems with your rifle stock and buffer setup...

Where did you get this?  Is this substantiated?

You should be just fine with your setup.  I am running a 7 oz. all stainless buffer with a 15% Wolf extra power spring in my 6.8 SPC.  It has a real smooth recoil impulse and less perceived recoil then any of my AR's in 5.56

What barrel, gas system and ammo will you be using.

Most 16" midlength 6.8s are over carbine stocks.
No problems with the standard or H buffers with this setup.
The 6.8 was designed to give the M-4 carbine more punch, so it was designed to drop in and use the M4 buffer system with 110 and 115 grain bullets.

Some personal experience with buffers and the 6.8:

I have one rifle that is a 16" midlength with an A2 rifle stock (rifle buffer and spring).
Shooting the SSA Tactical Load Barnes 85 TSX caused it to short stroke intermittently.
I had no problems with any other load, including other SSA Tactical Loads and my own 85TSX handloads.
The SSA powder in the 85 Tac loads is just really really fast.

The rifle spring is lighter than the carbine spring, but the rifle buffer is heavier than all but the H3 carbine buffers.
I had to remove a couple of the weights in my rifle buffer (around 4.6oz) and now it functions fine.

My 18" midlength rifle stocked 6.8 functions fine with everything with the standard rifle buffer and spring (unmodified).
That extra bit of barrel seems to give it enough dwell time for everything to function perfectly.

I'm not having issues with either the carbine buffer and carbine upper combo nor the midlength upper and rifle buffer.  Granted, I have less than 1000 rounds through either gun, but so far so good.

From shooting different configs over the past couple years, from talking with the people who designed loads, guns/uppers and such...so yeah, I'd say it's substantiated via everything out there.  They work with standard buffers and springs, 16-18" barrels prefer mid length gas, and it's damn near pointless to go to any barrel length longer than 18".

Any other questions?  Most of this is common knowledge if you're on the 6.8 forums, by the way...

Never had a problem with my rifle buffer and spring setup with any load from a 16" midlength gas. Just asking... I am on 6.8 forums as well.
