What can you guys tell me about these. I see Dtech and Oly make these and the idea seems pretty kool. I know everybody bashes Oly but I have heard really great things about their barrel quality. (ultra match ) I figure it would be a good long range target/deer rifle. How much performance would you sacrafice loading this round for the AR platform opposed to a bolt rifle.

the 243 wssm is a great caliber for it's size but I do believe that your limited to bullet weight in a ar platform because of oal. If I remember correctly 75gr is about the best you can get. the 105's start to go into the neck at 2.26" diameter and don't work well. your also limited to 11 rounds out of a 30 round magazine. i've seen successful mag modification to P mags to work with wssm rounds. one that might catch your attention is the new 300 OSSM. it's rumored to shoot a 150gr 30 caliber bullet faster than 30-06 out of a ar15 platform.

For the price difference go with the Dtech.  He uses Olympic parts and puts them together with some good old northern MN love!  I have one and am waiting on 2 more.  The 243 fits my bill perfectly and so far it is turning out to be better than advertised.  Mike really knows his stuff and he swear the SUM is a great barrel, I believe him.  I don't think you will lose much of anything between a bolt and an auto, but I will post some results soon as a friend of mine bought a Cooper model 16 in 243wssm to really reach out there.

I've got an Oly 25wssm and it shoots awesome, I consistently get sub MOA groups at 200 yards and have had no function issues.  The standard Winchester soft point 120 grainers are awesome and the 110 Accubond factory load is super accurate  (I had to run them through my seater die to fit in the magazines, I had to set them back about.020").  I would surely recommend the 25wssm due to its ability to perform with 120 grainers.

I have a DTECH 25 WSSM and it is crazy accurate. I would only recommend a WSSM if handload though.

Well I was thinking of the 243wssm and seems like the 25wssm is pretty sweet too. Though I would use this for hunting too, most of the shooting will be at paper. I figure the 243 would have a better bullet selection being a 6mm? What do you think? Sounds like I could maybe shoot heavier bullets from the 25wssm. 120gr hand loads to mag length with no problem, from Dtech's web site. 75gr with the 243, I hope I could go heavier than that without any issues. How about barrel life, I know the 243 isn't known for a real high round count. Is the 25 the same? Thanks much for all your input guys I really appreciate it. Merry Christmas to you all.

I don't think anyone has gotten a bullet heavier than 75gr in a .243 wssm. the bullets are too long and when set to mag length they start going into the case (where the bullet starts to taper towards the tip) going to a 25wssm will greatly increase barrel life as it's only around 3000ft/sec with a 120gr bullet vs's 3400+from the 75gr

d-tech has also done 6.5 on up to .358 caliber wssm wildcats. I think a 30cal wssm (300 OSSM) in a ar15 platform is the best fit. the others sacrifice to much IMO.

on a side note I do like my 25wssm but plan on maybe trying a 7mm wssm wildcat once the barrel is tired.

The 87 gr Hornady A-Max shoots really well in mine.  Here's a pic of my last match target shot 5 shots each at 300,400,500,600 & 700 yards, I tied for first on points, but another guy beat me by 1 X  on X count, 22 total shooters.

I recently got my Oly Arms K8 Mag .243 WSSM and started working up loads for hunting deer/varmints as well as long range target shooting.  In a short period of time I was able to work up some pretty accurate loads using Berger 95 gr VLD Hunting Bullets with COAL at 2.250".  With Varget Powder mine will consistently shoot 5 shots in 3/4" at 100 yards.  Very accurate at 200 and 300 yards also.  Bucks the wind good and performs very well on whitetail deer.  Also worked up similar accuracy with Sierra Game King 85 gr HPBT, but they don't buck the wind as good so I won't load them in the future.  Obviously there are many lighter varmint bullets available so I am very happy with the versatility of this rifle.  I highly recommend the K8 Mag!

1str8outdoorsman,

Do you know what velocity those Bergers are running?

Also, is the ogive down in the case mouth a little?

That is one bullet I haven't tried, I never got the 95 Sierras to shoot, so gave up on that bullet weight.

Thanks!

If I were going to go with a caliber of this type I'd go with the .257, bullet weights and BC's are much better in my opinion.  I used to shoot a 257 Roberts quite a bit, loved those 117 grain bullets, there's some really nice 120 grainers out there too.

The bonus of the 6mm (243) version is the number of great bullets available in weights down to (I believe) 58grain and some heavy stuff in the 115 range.  The 25 caliber version would definitely make a better whitetail or antelope gun, but I was looking at versatility, I have been shooting a 25-06 for years and love it, but my choice on the 243 was because of versatility.

Hey Lostinthewoods,
I have found very limited load data for the Bergers but liked everything I read about them.  They have exceptional ballistic coefficient for long range performance and expand well on whitetail deer.  I know they will be devastating for varmints as well.  My barrel is 24" with 1:10 twist.  The folks at Berger said my twist was not ideal, but should work.  They gave me the min/max load data.  Just tell them what powder you want to load and they will do the same for you.  I wanted to load Varget since that is a popular powder for several of my other calibers.  I worked up my loads to within 1/2 grain of the max and stopped there.  I don't have a chronograph to check them, but figure that the velocity is probably somewhere close to 3,000 fps +/-.

The ogive is just at the brink of being seated into the case mouth, but the neck has a good grip on the bullets and they don't dislodge or come loose while shooting the others in the magazine.  They don't deform with feeding either, like lead spitzers do.  I highly recommend that you research them and see what you think.  Have fun!

I just got my OLY 25 WSSM and have yet to shoot it. But first thing I did was check the OAL of the Winchester factory Ammo I stocked up on and it was too long for the magazine. Had to seat 80 bullets just a hair deeper.

Keep mind that different weight and styles of bullets will have different ogives and may offer some advantages over others. In other words, just keep shooting till you find something that works
