I have a friend wanting to build or purchase a AR in .308 - I am much more familiar with the 5.56 rifles and need some extra guidance. As far as major manufactures go - who is the top choice for a solid .308?

Armalite, the only choice IMO.

There are lots of good choices. How much do you want to spend and for what will it be used?

Having just gone through this I'll save you the trouble of trying to build.  The backlog of bits and pieces is still in full force with this family of rifles.  Finding all the components to assemble one......of any brand.....will be problematic at best and more expensive for sure.  To complicate matters, you can't simply select one part from column "A" and mate it with one from column "B" like you can do with a typical AR15 build.  These rifles are, for all practical purposes, proprietary.  You can swap bits here and there. The "FAQ" thread at the top of this forum helps a LOT so make sure you read through it.

Read up on all the manufacturers......there are only a few.......then figure out the composition of the rifle you're interested in: barrel length, type, stock, upper with foward assist or not, etc., and then search through the links above and elsewhere to find what you're looking for.  You'll find that the "lower-cost" models (still $1k+) will be harder to find as opposed to the $2K models which are in better supply.  Some places are still quoting months out into the future before they might be available.

Good luck.  I will say that they are worth the wait and the effort!

thanks... yeah I have never taken the time before to research the variants of the .308 - been studying the .308 FAQ - think I am going to guide him in the direction of buying a complete rifle or perhaps the complete upper and then maybe if he wants to build a high end lower then...I'll make sure I get the correct profile lower and a quaility LPK. Thanks guys

Sorry, I've seen just as many Armalites with feeding and extraction problems as I have with DPMS(Two from ea. manufacturer)  One Ar-10 was returned for repair, after a 4 month wait was returned repaired. One was repaired locally, gas tube was misaligned with gas port––easy fix.
Both DPMS were returned for repair, after a 2-3 month wait were returned repaired.
No appreciable difference in accuracy or reliability between those two brands IMO, although DPMS chambers are slightly tighter, and will not feed some surplus .308 ammo.

I have two DPMS 308's.  One is the 24" bull, very accurate.  The other I just got is an AP4 carbine.  Very pleased with both.  Never had a jam or fail to  feed problem.

I shot an Armalite the other day.  A 16" carbine.  Might be a little more accurate than the AP4  or I might have been having a better day?  I did have two fail to eject problems out of 9 shots (factory winchester ammo).  Gun might just have needed a good cleaning.

My 2 DPMS rifles have been very reliable and accurate.  I wouldnt hesitate to buy another.   To be fair at first I was considering an AR10T but price drove me away.   Magazine availability is also something to consider.  DPMS mags are made by several mfrs and you can actually find them.

Research Rock River Arms' LAR-8. I'm new to the AR - 308 concept too but I love this gun. A lot of great reviews and range reports out there. At $1100 it's hard to beat the quality for the price. Cheap mags, too.
