Does anyone have any good information on this cartridge? I know a couple of companies are making 308 AR platforms in this cartridge. I find the possibility of a 12" 338 Federal intriguing. I was at the range and a guy was shooting 338 Lapua subsonics with a can and that thing was quiet! I wonder if the 338 Federal would be similar. Thanks |

Great cartridge for anything on N.A. game 300 yards and under with the right bullet. I'd hunt anything in Africa with the exception of the large DG. 12" bbl???? recoil would limit the productivity in that platform. If memory serves recoil is some where in the 21# range.

I have a 338/284 savage. Reamed a 338 fed A+B barrel.
Has about 150 fps over a 338 fed. to get proper spped out of the 338 fed you need about a 20" barrel. 10" is way short. BTW midway has 338 fed savage barrels in stock for $130. 338 fed needs a bit more umph IMO. A 338/284 is getting there and is close to a 338-06. I did my barrel before the 338 RCM came along. If I was going to do a 338 short action heavy hitter from scratch it would be a 338 RCM. I use mostly 210 gr Barnes bullets for hog hunting. Bowls them over. Although the 338 fed, 06, RCM, WM etc are great rounds and suitable for a lot of large game, for the really nasty critters, I would rather have a 375 or a 416 ruger. As far as subsonic the 338 fed would be better IE a lot less case volume than a 338 lapua. You just need the twist to stabilize. |
