What is the best tube for the .308 rifles I'm building?   Can I use a Vltor mil spec tube?  I'm going to use a PRS stock BTW.

Any AR buffer tube will work.  It's the buffer and spring that are different for a .308.

i thought mil spec tubes were smaller in diameter so with a prs stock, there might be some rattle.  just get a standard A2 buffer tube from your favorite Ar-15 parts people.

You are getting your tubes mixed up.  In full length (rifle length) tubes like for A2, ACE or PRS, there is only one kind of tube.  No choices to make.   Now for carbine receiver extension [buffer tubes] there are many variations.  First there is the diameters.  Commercial is slightly larger than Mil-spec.  So if you use a commercial stock on a milspec tube there could be some rattle–– most all carbine stocks have a little play, since they have to move.  Except the CTR, which has a lock. Then there are the positions, you can get 4, 5, or 6 positions, some have a slant at the back.  And then for 308s, you can use an AR-10 carbine buffer tube which is longer than a regular AR-15 tube, and lets you use a AR-15 sized carbine buffer.

If you want a PRS, then get any old rifle buffer tube from a respectable manufacturer.  Of course don't buy super cheap crap.

Then you need a buffer and spring.  Use an armalite action spring, and the buffers are not hard to find.  I would recommend swapping the weights in the buffer for tungsten weights, to make the buffer heavier.

For PRS, you want this:

how can you tell the difference between the .223 and .308 buffer's?
my .223 buffers are 5.875" long.
the one that came with my BM bar10 is only 4.875" long and black in color.
what gives?
