Hello all, first time poster however long time lurker here at AR15.com.

I've finally decided that it is time to add a rifle to my collection of firearms (XD45, Mossber500, and a Saiga12).  Given the current political climate, I've decided that a semi auto is the way to go since I might not be able to buy one later.  I've decided realistically my budget for this rifle is somewhere between $1-2000.  I know I want to shoot .308WIN.  This rifle will be used for hunting, target shooting, and of course to blow heads off zombies.  I don't need to be able to shoot MOA out to 1k yards, but I would like something that can go out a few hundred yards at least, preferably somewhere at least to 600.

When I first started looking at adding a rifle to my collection that I wanted to use for hunting (mainly deer), the AR10 really stood out to me as the way to go.  Upon further investigation, I got my head wrapped around the DPMS LR308 series.  I was half an hour too late to buy a 24" SS LR308 today at the Raleigh, NC gun show, but it made me reevaluate my options.

I haven't really looked much into any other .308 semi auto rifles, but here's what I've gotten so far:

SCAR: way outta my price range

FAL: Decent guns, lots of mags although gotta be careful to buy the right kind, lots of availability

AR10: many different manufacturers, decent mag availability, can be very reliable/accurate in the appropriate configuration, good aftermarket

DPMS LR308: difficult to find, long backorder, high reliability, fairly accurate out of the box, shitty trigger, decent aftermarket, magazine availability spotty

FNAR: guaranteed sub MOA, very low magazine reliability, great action, extremely reliable/accurate out of the box

HK PSG1: see SCAR - way outta price range

Please help me decide which is the correct rifle for me, any and all input/info is appreciated.

Cliff notes:
Want a semi auto .308 that is accurate out to ~600yards for ~$1-2000.  Will be used for target shooting, hunting (mostly deer) and SHTF.  Had decided on DPMS without fully researching options, now overwhelmed and trying to make decision.

Frankly, I'd stick with Armalite's AR10. After reading some things from a reputable guy on here about DPMS's component selection, I wouldn't (and didn't) purchase one. I've got a Armalite Lower with a Noveske Upper, and it's a tack driver.

I've heard DPMS has had alot of quality and reliability issues from posters here.

Buy an AR10 and a DPMS 308. Keep the one you like the most and sell the other on the EE.

Absolutely NO problems with my DPMS. I'd buy another if I were in that market.

My Armalite is not a .308 (AR-10) , but I am really happy with the overall quality, and the company treated me right when I needed them.

I went with a Rock River LAR-8.  Comes with a match trigger, hogue grip, and takes plentiful FAL mags (both metric and inch).  I too was only looking at the DPMS LR-308's initially.

Big bucks, but check out LaRue's OSR if you haven't already.

When I was into the .308 thing, I had an Armalite AR10.  This rifle was absolutely reliable and very accurate.  Unfortunately it ended up sitting in the safe more and more once I got my 6.8 so I eventually sold it.  If I was going to get back in the big gun game...I'd get another Armalite.  Just my 2 cents.

That's another good point. My dealer sold me a complete Eagle Arms AR-10 lower what was a blem. The blem was actually fucked up threading where the recoil tube screws in. Armalite not only replaced it with a Armalite lower, but they gave my dealer a nice ass-chewing as well!
