I'm looking into building a 6.8 SPC Recce rifle, and while I've built several 5.56 rifles and am familiar with the process this will be my first 6.8 and I have a few questions.

I've found a solid SPC II 6.8 SPC 12" barrel from Denny at GTS that I'm looking at buying.  Obviously I'll be getting the bolt from Denny as well when I order the barrel.  My questions are as follows:

1.  What are the effective ranges for a 12" 6.8 barrel?  I figured I was probably good out to about 300 yds with the 12", and if I wanted to take it to 500 yds I would probably need to look at the 16" barrel.  Would that be a safe assumption?  This is a subjective question.  Depends upon how big your target is and how much energy you need to kill it.  I don't think a 6.8 SPC is much of a 500 yard gun, even with a 16" barrel.  Too much wind drift and not enough energy when it gets there...of course i'm using mine to shoot at feral hogs.  I consider a 6.8 to be a 400 yard gun, max.

2.  Do I need a different bolt carrier for the 6.8 bolt, or can I use the Young NM Chrome bolt carrier that I have had sitting in the safe for awhile?  Or are there any other bolt carrier that will work better?  Standard bolt carrier works fine.  Only things changed in a 6.8 SPC are barrel, barrel extension, bolt, flashhider, and mags.

3.  Can I use a Vltor VIS upper for a 6.8?  I've seen that Noveske has VIS uppers with their 6.8 barrels, but I didn't see anywhere on Vltor's website where it mentioned that their VIS uppers would work with 6.8.  Or, does it matter?  I'm assuming that I'm going to need a 6.8 specific upper.  Isn't that correct?  See above.
