What makes a SASS rifle.  I know that Armalite has one and DPMS has one.

The armalite SASS's has a gas block that can be adusted for suppressor use, which the DPMS doesn't have.  Neither rifle has any inscription on it saying SASS  or does it?  So what make a AR 308 a SASS rifle.

For a specific answer, follow the link.  But in general it seems everyone is putting together some sort of 20" 7.62 AR variant, slap variable optics on it and calling it an SASS.  For me, I don't care about the "SASS" tag, just want a quality 7.62 rifle for extended range shooting.  I have an OSR on order for that intended purpose.  I also have one on order to be set up as CQB.  I will probably never use either for anything but paper and some steel hangers so I personally don't care if its an SASS or not.

SASS is a military term used for a designation of sniper oriented 7.62 NATO round weapons. The military had vendors submit guns to them with SPECS assigned by the military for a SASS(semiautomatic sniper system). Knights won and the rest of us get to buy the other entrys on the civi market. Lots of development went into the entries. Got to get thst money back.

Keep in mind that the SASS was the Army's initiative despite the KAC currently being used in other branches. The Marine Corp's upcoming REPR specification will bring another round of 7.62's to the table that we are already seeing benefit the civilian market. LWRC's SABR is one such beast. The current delay in their delivery of rifles is to incorporate the changes necessary to meet the REPR spec. It is going to be one sweet rifle!

Could I consider my Rock River Arms  Lar 8 a SASS model?

Yes...you could probably consider your RRA a "SASS" rifle if you like.

Just a suggestion/constructive criticism though...you desperatively need to drop your scope down much closer to the centerline of the bore to get as much accuracy out of the rifle as possible.  Between the ARMS mount and the extra high rings, you have the scope setup up at least 1/2" or maybe more higher than it needs to be (hard to tell the exact extra height you have from the pic...could be close to 1").

I know that you apparently want to: 1) have a QR scope setup; and 2) want to be able to clear your BUIS...but I wouldn't personally want to do so at the expense of a very high scope setup and a very high cheek rest (even with the PRS's adjustability).

Nice rifle though...
