I recently purchased an A3 type 6.8spc AR15. I am wanting to remove the front site block and replace it with a 3 rail gas block. My reasoning is that I want to be able to mount a scope system to the flat-top without 1. seeing the front sight in my sight picture and 2. not have the need for some type of elevated scope base. I have looked at this and taken a few light "wacks" at the pins with a punch and hammer. They do not seem to want to move. I am affraid to hit it too hard for fear of damaging something. Is there a trick to this? I am driving the pins out from left to right and have the barel and FSB mounted securley on a wooden base. Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Tight pins are better PRESSED out than beaten out.

Start with a short bit-punch in the press.
Work up to a longer bit-punch as the pin moves.

Good suggestion, I have access to a 2 ton press. That may work....
Thanks!

Has anyone ever used the ar15 front site bench block from Brownells? If so, good or bad experiance?

I'm sure a press would be the better way to do it, but I've done quite a few with a 3 lb. hammer and a punch.  The key is to hit it hard.  If you tap it, you will just munge it up.  I recently swapped the gas block on my RRA 6.8 upper, and it took me all of 2 minutes to get the gas block off.

If I remember correctly the pins on an AR15 are all tapered and you drive them out with the muzzel pointing to your left.

The specification is for tapered pins.

Some manufacturers use straight pins with an interference fit.  They're the bastards to remove as they're deformed by design when installed.  I know Bushmaster uses this type of non-standard pin.

The only thing you'll see through a scope of 4X power or greater is a faint "shadow". It will not interfere whatsoever with your sight picture. US Army Mark 12 Model 0
uses a low mounted scope with a standard front sight base - no problem.

Not correct.  Some pins are straight, some are tapered. MOST drive out left to right - STAG and S&W M&P15 drive out right to left.

+1.  Measure both ends of exposed pins with calipers, then "drive" from smallest measured side.
