I built my 1st 556 AR and I have the bug now. I am thinking I need a 6.8spc upper for a hunting rig. It will be used for mule deer, antelope and hopefully hog sometime. But I don't know where to look.

This is what I want:
- lightweight
- flattop upper with no sights
- low profile gas block
- SAAMI II Chamber, this is better apparently???
- Twist rate???
- $500-$700 price range

Any ideas?

Based on your requirements, I would say look at Dennys Guns/GTS a ARFCOM sponsor, or RRA, Stag Arms, or a WOA barrel build. They all use a SAAMI Spc II chamber now as far as I know.  You should be able to find that config in one of those companies.  1:11 twist is ideal at the moment.

6.8 Is good to go on pronghorn. My father shot this one at a lazed 260 somethings yards, 4x scope, one shot, flop over. SSA 110 grain pro hunters.

You will like hunting with the 6.8 if your going lightweight for sure.

Cold, thanks for the info. Does Denny's sell complete upper assemblies? I checked out their site but couldn't find complete uppers.

Nice looking antelope!

the J&T uppers (and Model1) are 1:9.5 twists.  They'll work, but really not good for hot ammo.

The RRA and Stag are 1:10 twists––still not ideal for the combat loads, but better.

I opted for a Stag from Legal-Transfers.....best price I could find, and I searched long and hard for the best deal.  Chrome lined and came with a mag.  (It was something like $65 cheaper than a RRA)

I'm using a Stag Arms 5H upper I picked up from http://www.lanworldinc.com for $488, magazine included.  Mine has a picatinny front site base at no add'l cost and came with one C-Products magazine.   I've been very pleased.  Its got a SAMMI-II chamber.  Mine shoots HDY 110 V-Max bullets over 29.0 gr of H322 (WSR Primer, SSA Brass) at a muzzle velocity of 2585 fps.

You have to call Denny.
I did today and found out a ton of information (though I forgot one part I need to ask about).  He's very helpful and very interesting to speak with.

I just got an RRA mid-length from Legal Transfers for $449 shipped.  I installed a YHM single rail gas block from Brownells, and it is good to go for under $500.

As with other RRA stuff I have purchased, fit and finish are excellent.

Just ordered my 5.56 Stag upper from Pete @ Legal Transfer. He says everyone is months backordered on this stuff, and for a 6.8, to wait for the Stag 20" that's coming. Said it'll be available for order in about 30 days, and going to be one of the best available. I'm looking for something with the KOTonics barrel w/has the Spec II chamber (different from the SAAMI from what I understand) and 1:11, four groove rifiling. I thought about the Stag 6.8 but after reading a lot, I decided to go with something that has 1:11 twist, and I don't like the 1/2" thread dia. on the end of the Stag. For real accuracy, it removes too much of the crown.
YMMV
