Howdy ya'll,

I'm going through the process of picking out the parts I'll need/want for a 6.8SPC build.  This primary/initial purpose of this firearm will be for hunting and range fun.  Initially, to keep the cost low and allow me to buy other items before the ban, I'm going with a budget build to keep initial costs down and "get er done" before the election.  I already own a M14semi and an M4clone, so I don't have to duplicate those.

I'm thinking of getting a complete 5.56 Mid Length kit with an assembled upper (less receiver), removing the barrel and bolt and selling these items off to help fund the 6.8MM SPC barrel and bolt.  This gets me a basic kit I can assemble a rifle on initially and something I can get soon.  I figure I can add to that:

Aero "Multi" caliber receiver
Cardinal Armory lightweight 16" barrel
Bolt
Magazines

and have a completed rifle fairly easily.  Later, when time is not of the essence, I can upgrade anything I find I need/want from the basic kit.

I do have some questions though about some items:

1.  Will the lightweight Cardinal Armory barrel fit right into a kit such as the one I've described?

2.  Is there any real need/solid reason to use the LMT over a Stag Arms bolt if the primary mission of the rifle is hunting?  I have the capability of staking the BCG myself and was an M16 Armorer in the service, so I know how to handle extractor spring issues.

3.  Of the assortment of magazines C Products sells for the 6.8SPC, what capacity seems to be the best all around to take hunting?  I'm in NE Georgia and would only be hunting in Georgia.  I would like to pick up some high caps as well as range mags.  In 5.56, I use 30 rounders for 3-gun and 20's for High Power and at the range, so I know about the "one capacity doesn't fit all" situations.

I would also recommend commentary on anything I'm not realizing/thinking about related to the 6.8SPC and getting started with it, including reloading, as I'm an capable, experienced reloader and own single stages, auto rotating turrets and progressive presses.  I would definitely reload for this caliber and would buy at least 1000 brass to start.

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions.

Regards,

Dave

I think you could maybe do it cheaper from scratch ??.
Midway has dpms strippd flat top uppers on sale for 89.99
Its just a lot of little parts to get, but not hard.

I had a complete rifle length upper I was swapping over. The parts I needed were barrel, bolt, mid length gas tube, muzzle brake, thread cap. I have a clark CF handguard so I cut that down to midlength, otherwise I would have needed a mid length handguard.

Yes, its a midlength.

I am using the standard bolt from cardinal with no problems so far. More strength cant hurt though if you have the spare change. Depends I guess on how hard you are going to push it.

Thats sort of a personal choice. I just got a 5 round mag for hunting in case I run into the game warden. I found that another 20 round mag I already have works. Supposedly PRI mags will allow a longer oal

Buy your SSA brass from SSA directly. Its cheaper. Midway got me on that one.

The 3 top hunting bullets are
Barnes 110 gr TTSX bullets are the sledgehammer for hogs. Have yet to shoot one with the 6.8 barnes, but that will change next weekend. I use barnes in other calibers too. Good bullets. I like the TTSX or MRX better than the normal tsx.
The hot ticket according to hi-tech-rancher is RL10x. That will get you 2700 fps.
I am loading H335 right now.

110 gr Accubonds are superb.
110 gr Pro hunters are good too and cheap, but may shed the jacket.

I am still looking for a suitable 130 grainer. I might try hawks.

There is a lot of load info over at the 6.8 cardinal forum

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions.
