I recently bought a dpms lr308 ap4 and I'm looking to put a scope on it.
I would like to replace the front sight with a low pro gas block.
Any opinions on which gas block to choose? rails or no rails? maybe Vltor?
I am open to any options.

edit: I plan on keeping the existing FF tube for now

I just sent DPMS an email with the same question, except I want to but a 4 rail standard length tube on it, as soon as I hear back I'll post

I had good results with a JP Enterprise low profile adjustable gas block.  IMO, rails on the gas block are completely unnecessary--unless you plan to install a BUIS of some sort.....and in that case, I'd stay with the original.

Putting an optic on an AR isn't a problem with a standard front sight.  Since it's too close to focus on through a magnified optic, the worst you'll see is a shadow and that really only occurs at low magnification settings.  (I've run everything from a Tasco 3x9 to a Nightforce 5-22 on my rifles--no problems with the front sight getting in the way except for a 4x32 ACOG TA01NSN that had a pretty dark and noticeable shadow.  It wasn't a major problem IMO, and the horizontal crosshair actually lined up pretty well with the front sight)

I'm looking at doing this as well.  One thing I worried about is if the DPMS's are coated before or after the front sight is attached.

In other words, if I take off the front sight that ships with the rifle, will there be bare metal exposed or are both the barrel and front sight coated seperately and THEN put together?

Might seem like a stupid question, I'm just getting ready to order one and wanted to double-check.

to answer all the questions,

you can use any AR gas block for a .750" diameter barrel

the barrel is not finished under the gas block, it is bare metal.
