Hey guys,
I am thinking hard about getting a 300 whisper/fireball to play with.

I know that M1 sales and oly (not in consideration) sell them ready to go, are there any other sources?  Other than the super expensive ones anyway.

Thanks for any info.

Bigsampson,

Give Tony a call at Del-Ton.  I bought my first 300-221 from him and was very happy with the service and product.

Check out www.quarterbore.net  that is the dedicated whisper forums, and often there is used uppers for sale.  I bought mine from www.noveskerifleworks.com however it appears they are sold out for the moment so I echo 320pf's suggestion and call Tony at Del-Ton.

Bigsampson,

I just got off the phone with John Noveske at  Noveske Rifleworks. In our conversation John Noveske indicated that they would probably make another 300-221 Fireball run with the next month or so... depending on their work load for the more common/popular components.

What they typically do is that they make a run of about 30 to 40 barrels at a time (15-20 ~10-inch barrels and 15-20 16-inch barrels) two or  three times per year. After they make a run, they post on their website that they have 300-221 Fireball barrels available. So I suggest that you check there on a regular bases.

Do you have an AR10 type?  Can't you just pack 308 ammo w/ a reduced power load & that filler stuff to the same effect?  Save you from buying a whole other upper.

You could load some +200 grain bullets w/ a low pressure subsonic charge.

Honestly, I think it's easier to just build the 300 Whisper/Fireball.  It'd be more fun, too...

I think that you would not be able to get the rifle to cycle because the pressure curve would be way off.  The result is that the pressure at the gas port would be too low.

By putting the gas port in the pistol position, the 300-221 Fireball is specifically designed to run sub-sonic and super sonic loads.  You can also get the 300-221 Fireball to run both sub-sonic and super sonic loads in a 16-inch barrel with the gas port on the carbine position but this set-up usually requires an adjustable gas block.

Bigsampson,

You might also try giving John Noveske a call at Noveske Rifleworks.  I know he does not have any barrels in stock but I think that several people have already called him.... So I think he is considering making another run of barrels.

Thanks for the input guys.
I think I am going to go with a Model one upper, at least give it a try.

I do have a 308 upper, but it has a 24 inch barrel and it would kinda defeat the purpose.  I want a light, little carbine that can shoot 30 cal bullets subsonic and supersonic that my kids can hunt with and maybe well suppress later.  I am probably going to get a 6.8 spc or 6.5 in the next month or so too.

Thanks again for the inputs, I'm still in the research mode now.

I say for the next one, get a 6.5 Grendel.  But that's just me...

Thats right.  Thanks for the correction.  I was only thinking in terms of the ballistics but not the action cycle.
