Looking at a 308 DPMS, most of them seem to come w/ heavy barrels and are in the 9.5 lb weight with the short (18") barrels.  If anyone has one of these (or an AR10 w/ a 20" barrel, about the same weight), do you find it too heavy?  DPMS does make one with a much lighter barrel (the 308L), anyone have one of these?  Your opinions?  Thanks!

Yes they are heavy.  Barrels probably could be lighter.  Heavier barrels are easier [cheaper] to manufacture as there is less machining to do on the barrel blank.  Even the AP-4 barrel is very heavy under the handguards.

Some of it is just 308 parts are bigger, like a 308 bolt group weighs twice an AR-15 bcg.  Also, the whole receiver is longer, so heavier.

I have a med con 18" barrel and I got the weight down to 8lbs.  Not much further I would want to go.  Need some weight to soak up the recoil.
