Seriously thinking of getting one of DPMS AP4 rifles.
I mostly interested in a light CQB, deer rifle with some range when needed. Range meaning up to 6-7 hundred yds.
What could I expect from this rifle overall.

Your input from those who have had one or have one would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Light is relative.  The 308 is a great cartridge in this platform though.  If you want "light" then skip the tactical 4 rail system, unless you want it for CQB purposes, in which case, I'm guessing you will get it anyway.

I have the AP-4 with the FF aluminum tube.  It's still heavy compared to my 223's but it's a well balancing rifle so far.

Mine has the standard A2 style FSB and the screw on rear BUIS style sight, I haven't decided on an optic or scope yet to put on it.  I also haven't had it out shooting past 100 yards yet either.  So I can't give you much input on accuracy out to 600-700, but I can tell you the rifle is well put together, and tolerances are good.  I can shoot 600-700 with my M1A and my M1A Scout, so I have no reason to believe that the AP-4 won't do it.  Since my 223's will do it also, and the AP-4 is basically just an AR in 308, it should handle it well.

I'm thinking of drilling holes (or having holes drilled) into the FF tube to both lighten the weight, and to give me some spots to mount a couple of rails for attachments, but the rifle is still new enough that I haven't gotten around to that yet.

For the price, I just don't think the package can be beat, unless you want to save another 3-400 and get yourself an M1A Scout or M1A NM for another 4-600.

Make sure you buy extra mags with the rifle if you order it new, I got a total of 5 mags with the gun when I bought it and didn't have to pay the extra shipping on the mags at a later time.  And sometimes they will give you a lower price on the mags if you buy it at the same time as you buy the gun.  YMMV

The barrel is probably heavier than you think:

AP4 308

Look at a similar barrel in .223, note the part under the handguard.  308 is WAY heavier.

By 'light' I am reffering to a comparison of other .308 options, but thank you for the info on the barrel.

I bought an AP4 a few months ago and I'm very satisfied with it.  I've only shot out to 300 yds with the irons, and it's minute of pizza box at that range for me (but that's just my lackluster shooting).  I'm not sure about 500+ yds.  Alot of folks here will tell you the 16" bbl will hurt you on velocity and long distance efficacy.  But, I really like the AP4's weight and balance.  It's a meat eater.

Got my .308B 2 weeks ago and setting it up for stationary long range sniping. My AP4 should be here this week and will set it up for speed. Had a light little Bushmaster .223, but can't get past those little tiny bullets. I always figured that little holes will kill, but big holes will kill faster!

And deader.

The AP4 hands down is one of the most slam dunk rifles I own.  It is light (hell some full size .223's weigh 8-9lbs now) compared to most battle rifles, handles like a fat M4, and is a 1 MOA shooter with the right ammo/shooter.

It is VERY hard to beat, especially when you can find some stock ones for $1K.

Don't bother drilling the aluminum handguard to reduce weight (it's very light already)-better add holes for increased cooling or attaching a rail.

I thin 600-700 yards is do-able from a 16 inch tube, it's just comparing it to a 20+inch barrel for the added velocity-the difference at those ranges can be drastic-the bullet starts dropping like an anvil.

You can customize a DPMS to match the AP4's look with a longer barrel, I believe also.

Good luck

Got my AP4 last weekend. It's like a beefy M4 that hit's a whole lot harder. Thinking about selling my .308B now. Not sure which optic to put on the AP4 however. Maybe a ACOG.

Buying a 308B was one of the best moves I've ever made.  I have a long ways to go yet with getting a good load, but the rifle is better than I am.
