Hi All -

I'm finally getting around to building up a barrel I've had laying around for the past 5 years or so.  It's an 18" .300-221 .750 dia. - the gas port is located 5" from the rear.  Randall at ar15barrels made it during his early days.    My question is what gas tube should I use?  Is the nominal 'pistol' length?

I'm not going to be using a silencer anytime soon, but I'd like to leave the option open.  I've seen listings for the adjustable gas tubes - any good ones in particular?

Thanks!

eta:  Perhaps I'm asking the wrong question.  Would it be better to use a normal gas tube and an adjustable block?  Given the short length, and the fact that I'd like to use a free-float tube, what gas block should I use?  Any that fit well under FF tubes?

AR-TRVLR,

I checked my notebook and here is what I have on my 300-221 barrels.  My Noveske barrel has the gas port in the "standard" pistol position.  The "standard" pistol position is 5.047 inches from the end of the barrel extension. So in short you should be able to use a standard pistol length gas tube.

I use JP low profile adjustable gas blocks.  They will fit under the full-float tube.

In fact it your gas port is the correct diameter (~0.073 to 0.075 inch--- I do not know the exact gas port diameters.... I need to get some pin gauges) you might not need to fiddle very much with the gas block adjustment when you change from sub-sonic to super sonic. loads.  I seem to have lucked out on this front.  My guns run without have to adjust the gas block when I change from sub to super sonic.

P.S.  If you think that you might want to sell that barrel, can I have first right of refusal?
