HI.  I am new to this forum but am finding it very useful and informative.  I was wondering if anyone else who has built a 7.62 x 39 upper has experienced this problem.  During the first 50 rounds the extractor completely broke off.  There was nothing left of it after a short period of shooting.  I have since replaced it and also installed the heavy duty spring kit from Brownells.  That seems to have solved the problem for now but I was just wondering if this happens frequently in this calibre on an AR platform.

Secondly I originally was using soft point bullets.  They don't feed well at all.  At first I thought it was the magazine but then I switched to V-Max bullets and they feed fine ( I am assuming because of the harder point.).  The soft points seem to drag out of the mag and then the bolt rides over top of  the round. The lead tip will be smeared on one side but not a whole lot.  I am waiting for a C-P Steel mag which I have been told will probably deal with the soft points not feeding.  The mags I have at the moment are MGW's and are plastic.  They will often feed the first two rounds but for sure the third will jam.  I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they resolved it.  It is really annoying. (And I have a lot of SP's to go through!)

I have been impressed with the accuracy of the V-Max bullets.  My best group has been .997 inches at 100 yds (5shots) using RL7 and Federal match primers.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

What hardware (bolt and barrel assembly) are you using?

I've got a Model 1 7.62x39 and have had no upper problems. The MGW plastic mags did not work for me at all. Frankenmags do work, as do USA 10 rounders and standard 5.56 mags w/7 rounds loaded. C Products also now offers 5 and 10 round mags.

I am using a RRA bolt and barrel.  Thanks for your input.  Hopefully the C-P mags will do the trick.  BTW are there any issues with the 10 round mags in the AR?.  I have read that without the curved magwell the 7.62 x 39 rounds don't feed welll in larger mags.

I'm using a 6.5 Grendel 10 round magazine in my 7.62 with no problems. It's worth to give something a try if you have it handy.  You never know, it may work.  My Grendel mags work so well in my 7.62 so well I doubt I'll buy CP 7.62 mags.  I wrote CP an email about my experiences and got no reply...so the hell with them.

My apologies, I should have said DPMS barrel and bolt.

Mags Larger than ten rounds typically suffer from bullet tip drop unless they have specially modified followers because of the conical shape of the AK round. The .223 based carts are more cylindrical and when stacked do not produce the banana shape. The Cmags have slighter ribs in the body of the mag that supports the cartridge sides. I bet if the anti tilt follower was removed the mag would work even better.
