| Whats the best 50.cal upper???? |
|
Best AR-15 upper is arguably the ALS conversion. Available at www.50bmg.net. Wait time is about 1 year for a build but price is affordable at less than $2K. $250 down is all you have to pay to get on the list. Best 5-shot group shot at a match is 3.5 inches for 5 rounds at 1000 yards. I've got one on order coming in May. It'll be my second 50. If interested in getting into the 50 BMG game, consider joining the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association at www.fcsa.org. Best place to learn about 50 BMG is our forum. The Bohica is a decent entry level rifle but I wouldn't plan on shooting any 1/2 MOA groups with it. You get what you pay for. The Ferret 50 is also a good choice so far as an AR-upper is concerned, they just haven't performed quite as consistently at 1000-yd matches as the ALS uppers. Regards, -David Edgewood, NM |
Not trying to flame, just curious to know, is this an opinion or supported by some records or something. When I shopped them, I thought there were some Ferrets that held a record or was winning matches or such. thankx. |

The BOHICAs i've seen are pretty clunky. They are clearly not setup for repetitive firing (on match class shoots about 60 rounds) due to their weight and inefficient muzzle break. It's not my job to prove that a rifle WON'T shoot. It's yours to prove that it WILL. At this point, there has not been a Bohica shoot a half-minute group in FCSA 1000-yd competition. Both ALS and Ferret have shot half MOA 5-shot groups in sanctioned competition. At this point, the Bohica is an unproven system for long range shooting. It is, however, a great way for folks to get into the 50 BMG game for a minimal cost. FCSA match records reveal that more ALS shooters win matches than Ferret shooters. Granted the ALS has been around longer and there is no way to control for the individual shooter but I stand by my statement. A quick read of the last couple years of match records in Very High Power supports this assertion. Regards, -David Edgewood, NM |
Once again you admit to no personal experience, but make a negative comment that you can not back up. Please explain your statement they are not set up for repetitive firing? You fire one round and have to put the gun down? ![]()
And how much match experience do you have? Have you shot in any matches? IIRC you didn't spend big bucks on your rifle either, to get in the game. FWIW the Bohica brake has been remodeled. |

Flash: You seem to have some bone to pick and an agenda to put forward. The BOHICA is NOT match proven. It's price shows in the build quality. I'm all for low-priced 50's. Allows more folks to get into the game. But if you want to shoot accurately at long range, I suggest using a proven design. If you want to shoot rocks at 300 yards with ball ammo, more power to you. And my initial assertion remains the same, a rifle should not be considered MATCH GRADE ACCURATE without being proven. The reverse is bogus, that a rifle is accurate until proven inaccurate. BS. By the way, Redneck asked a subjective question, what is the BEST 50 Upper. I put forth the best answer I know. The most accurate, best 50 BMG I know of is the ALS, followed by the Ferret 50. I'm putting my money where my mouth is and have an ALS on the way. Maybe you should consider supporting your statements. If you would like, i'll be happy to meet you at the Raton FCSA match in May or the World Championship in July 2008 and you and I can have a little shoot off. You with your stock BOHICA and me with my stock ALS. Use whatever lower you would like, setup as you would like. I think I have a few folks that will lay some odds on that 1000-yd shoot off. I've shot in 3 matches over the last two years. Hunter class only at two matches and Hunter and Unlimited Classes at one. Been reloading for 50 BMG for a little over 2 years. All my first hand experience has been with a State Arms Shorty which I have a NF NXS 5.5-22x56 NP-R2 on. I currently have on order an ALS upper that will be configured to be legal for light gun. At the matches I have attended as well as the ones I've read about in VHP, the ALS upper is constantly on top, in good contention with McBros custom bench guns. Darrin, the maker of the ALS hand laps his Pac-Nor barrels for each gun. He makes them one at a time, less than 100 per year, I think in the range of 50-75. They take a year to get built from the time you order one. I ordered mine last May and will be expecting it in a few months, hopefully in time for this year's competition season. I plan to shoot all three matches at Raton, NM this year, one in May, one in July, and one in September. This year I had an Elk hunt in October and a Oryx Hunt in November that soaked up the cash I would have otherwise used for the September FCSA match. Ferret 50 uppers also have shot well at the matches I've attended but not in the numbers of the ALS. Ferret uses the same barrels as State Arms, Lothar Walther. -David Edgewood, NM |

looks like the Watson weapons ar15 conversions are a little cheaper than SOME of the BOHICA uppers both are between $1000 and $1300 again depending on what you get BUT the bmg platform is an expensive field to play on theres no such thing as cheap you want cheap 22lr's are cheap 50bmg is as far away from that as can possible be unless you get a 20mm just remember the average shooters biggest variable is the shooter the average shooter @ 1,000 yards can throw an additional $1,000 at there rifle and still not shot any better |

The Watson's Weapons upper is a seriously Entry level piece, much less usable than the Bohica or any other 50 I can think of. You have to screw the bolt into the thing after loading each round and then re-assemble the upper to the lower after its loaded. Man that would suck. Then to extract you have to withdraw the takedown pin, unscrew the bolt, remove the cartridge, and repeat the loading process. I don't think i'd buy one of those for $500. But then they were a pretty neat idea before Ferret, Ultralight, Bohica, ALS, and the like came up with their bolt action uppers. -David Edgewood, NM |
