I am looking for a scope for my new DPMS 308 with 24" BB. I would like one that can shoot to 600 yards. I have been doing alot of research and just can not figure out which one to go with. I would like to stay in the $450 range or less. I plan on using handloaded Hornady 168gr A-max's. I have been looking at the Mil-dot scopes. Can you accruatly get them set up so each Mil-dot represents a diffrent yardage? And if so at what magnifacation level. http://a576.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/44/l_f0bae4833fce1696d315648460aaffaf.jpg |
| I just got in my DPMS .308, like yours except I went with the A3 reciever. For around $400-$450 I hear great things about the Bushnell 4200's and the Sightron's. Can't go wrong with Leupy either. Since I'm outta cash for now I'm just going to throw a Tasco WC I've had in the bottom of my closet on the rifle for the time being or until I pop the reticle. |

I went with IOR 2.5x10 on my DPMS, but I have never gone out the 600 (no where to shoot). IOR 2.5x10 I heard good things about: (no advocating swfa, just for info) Elite 3200 10x fixed This one looks good too, but not sure: Elite 5x15 I like more mag, but thats me. Good glass is big $$. Check out the optics forums, those guys know everything. TJ |

168gr AMAX are my fav. Good choice. I have a Sightron Big Sky SII 4-16X42 Mil dot and it works great. I chose it because it has 80 MOA of elevation adjustment which is fantastic for a 1" tube and should easily get you out to 600yds. My only other viable option for my price range to get enough elevation adjustment was a super sniper but I wanted a variable and the super snipers glass aren't all that clear IMHO. The Sightron Big Sky has very bright clear glass. It has target turrets with crisp audible adjustments. It has an objective based parallax adjustment but the last inch or so does not turn so you can still use flip up caps if desired. It was $500. Looks damn good to: sightron.com/index.php?action=view_category&cat_id=1169143495 www.swfa.com/pc-10624-1511-new-sightron-4-16x42-sii-big-sky-riflescope.aspx

I purchased the 10X-42 30mm SS "super sniper" scope from SWFA for my LR-308. I got the more expensive version with the side focus adjustment knob. http://www.swfa.com/c-231-super-sniper-rifle-scopes.aspx It has turned out to be one tough scope. It is very clear due to the simple high quality optics. Zoom scopes have much more glass inside, this requires extremely good optics to get a decent view without loss of light, contrast or clarity. For example, at the range, my SS scope can read the target printing at 50 yards. However my Nikon zoom cannot, nor can my buddies zoom Leupold that cost 3 times more. It is that clear! As for the mil dot system, it works well if you learn how to use it. I would prefer to have a calibrated scope for the big LR, with bullet drop compensation built in. But a cool thing is available for the SS scope, that I want to try. A calibrated knob for elevation! Cheap too! Dial a distance and be dead center in the reticle. cujet |

Check out the very detailed reviews. http://www.swfa.com/ss_testimonials.aspx Lots of nice things about this scope. It is made in Japan and the quality really shows. By the way, the thing always returns to zero. I tried the dial a box thing just to see if it was true, and it is. One click up, shoot, two clicks up, shoot, all the way to 10 then 10 right then 10 down then 10 left. It ends up right where I started. Very cool. cujet |
Looks sweet, that might be the setup I end up using on my new .308. |
I too have the LR 308 24"A3 Upper and Fluted barrel, Chip McCormick Trigger, Harris 6"-9" bipod, and I just ordered a MagPul PRS GenII stock. I have the Burris tactical heavy duty low rings,(get the medium ones, these all have 6 allen screws and are .50cal BMG rated), and a 1/2" Brownells riser. I also have the SS109 scope from SWFA with side focus. This is one great scope for the money! In comparision tests they had to get to the $1000.00 price range to find one better. This scope is made by Tasco With Federal 168Gr Gold Match the rifle put 2 rounds through the same hole .40" then I got excited and pull the next one out to .68". I think with me doing my part this rifle will shoot .50" 3 shot groups and .75" 5 shot groups with no problem. The Hornady TAP 168gr and 155gr AMAX did almost as good as the Federal gold Match. This rifle scope combination will get anything done within the limits of the .308 ballistics. BTW these rifles are chambered for .308 Win. not 7.62x51 like the AP4 carbine although it shot the LC and Win. white box under an inch as well. Enjoy your rifle mines a pleasure with no malfunctions but only 320 rds through it so far.

I got the Monarch series 3.3x-10x I run mostly on 10x but some on 3.3 but rarely anything in between. board sponsor buds gun shop www.budsgunshop.com has great scope prices. there is where I have gotten my optic for the last couple of years, even before tey were a sponsor. Only negative is that it takes a couple days to process the order. |
