Hello

i am looking for a new rifle a DPMS panther bull 24 or a lr308.
butt i don't know yet what is the best ammo.

in the netherlands we shoot al lot indoor  50-100 meters, and we can shoot outdoor
a couple of times a year 300-500-800 meters.

is a 223 capable voor 500-800 meter with some cross wind ?
or can i better go for the 308.

please some pro and cons

(sorry for bad english)

800 yds is pushing the limits for a 223 without a crosswind

The AR15 is very capable of shooting 80 and 90g projectiles at  1000yrds (.914km), the heavier projos require an 8-6.5 twist rate on the rifling (easily mounted on a rifle you already have). I have seen US Army Marksmanship Unit members fire 195+/200 scores with annoying regularity at these distances. Like the 5.56 cartridge the 7.62x51 cart is right at the very edge of its performance envelope at these distances but the heavier projectile may buck the wind better.

Now if you got a DPMS in .243 with a 22-3?" 8-9 twist barrel the performance is significantly greater, most long range shooters I know shoot some form of 6mm at a thousand. It is the best of both worlds, high BC med weight projo at +3000fps.

why not both???   just kidding.  i have shot both the .223 and .308.  i am with INFSQDLDR  on the .260.  awsome, awsome ballistics and its starting to replace the .308 at long range compitition.   the .260 is a very capable round.  also very good for hunting if you do any.
some are starting to use the 300 rem. short action ultra mag, but i do not think this ould be enjoyable at the indoor range.  well,  i would enjoy it, but i like big booms!!!!!!  probably why my hearings going.

hope this helps, brian
