I remember this problem from another post, but can't find the info.

Just got a new dpms bild and I can't remove the upper from the lower unless I take off the grip and remove the rear takedown pin fully. the front coes out without a problem, and I can see there is no interference from the bolt or recoil buffer. Looks like the rear pin does not slide far enough out of the way for the upper rear block to lift up. I tried reversing the small pin which sets into the takedown pin to see if I could get more movement, but no go - anyone had this problem and any fixes besides trying to get another pin from dpms and seeing if that fixes it?u

Check to see if the detent pin hole is drilled properly (i.e. isn't drilled too far inboard).

Or shorten the pin.

It looks like the pin is just not retracting enough out of the center of the receiver for the upper to come loose. With the upper off, and the pin out, it's not quite flush, but does protrude slightly.

I ordered another rear pin from dpms and will try that to see maybe if it was a bit out of spec. If that doesn't work I'll need to try some of the above suggestions -

Sometines the spring is too long (or the hole in the grip is not deep enough.  When the grip is tightened, the spring is completely compressed and can not move to allow you to move the pin.

Try a shorter (or shorten the spring).  You can also drill out the hole int he grip a little deeper.

Did you ever get the problem resolved?

I have only had my DPMS LR .308 for about two weeks. One of the first things I did was shorten the rear spring. I have had this very problem while assembling other ARs. I clipped about 1/8 of an inch off of the bottom of the spring. I promise this is the least invasive, and easyest to correct if you mess it up, option that you have. The first time I tried to seperated mine, a bullet would not even apply enough force when pressed against the pin. Now, I can do it by hand. It still takes some force, but that is a good thing. My DPMS fits very tight. There is no play at all between the upper and lower. My pin is even difficult to put back in. It requires far mor force than my Essentail arms / Model1Sales AR-15.

Good Luck man.

I am confused here!   on my ARs the grip detent is for the safety lever, and the buttstock holds in the detent fo rthe take down pin.  so, i'm not really seeing how loosening the grip would allow you more play in the rear take down pin.....except for the already mentioned too long grip screw.

thanks,
advntrjnky

ETA: unless it is the .308...i have never had one of those apart.

Correct, the only thing liistening the grip would do is eliminate the possible problem of a grip screw which is too long.

The receiver for a 308 is longer than an AR-15 receiver. The 308 takedown pin detent comes up from the grip, not from the buttstock as done on an AR-15.
