I took out a terrorist groundhog this afternoon.  One shot, one kill.   140 gr Saeco cast bullet through the head at about 75 yards or more.

Cast bullet? What velocity are you pushing them at? Any issues?

Pushing it 2300 fps with no issues.  I've been a cast loader for over 40 yrs.  Before anyone scoffs at the velocity, one can push lead faster then jacketed with less pressure due to less resistance...or just say friction.  Even at the 2300 it's a medium to high mild load.  No ways at all like any of the starting jacketed loads.   By the way I'm using H4198 powder and it no they don't lead up the gas system.

I'm on a seven acre farm in the mtns of TN and the Cherokee national forest is across the main road from me.  The bear reserve is 12 miles from me.  They put the bad bears from Smokey Mtns park there, but as anyone knows, bears travel over 100 miles a nite looking for food.  Along with the bears we're getting mountain lions.  I didn't exactly shoot the groundhog in my yard.  I shot him about 200 yards from the house and brought him/her up for pictures.  I don't really go out an hunt them, wanted to see what the cast bullet did.  Being they are hard cast, there is no expansion.  I would have to take steps to fix that if I were going to hunt with them.

I liked the account of your adventure you emailed better!  Much more detail!  HAHA!!!  Nice shooting.  I really can only operate "tactical varmint" missions around my house with a .22 rifle, given the proximity of houses, more for the sound than anything else.  I know where the houses are and the roads, so I can shoot safely, but people get a little freaked when they hear a hipower rifle touched off and it is not deer season!!

Glad you posted your mission on here....

Funny,  I've spent some time in Tn. Built the Titans Stadium, East towne mall in Knoxville.
I've Hunted Hogs all over Tellico, Fished Cherokee and Douglas lakes.
Are you around Cosby or Townsend?

Off topic, but I am picking up a kitten for my daughter which is a rescue operation out of TN.  She wants to name him Titan for some reason, which is sort of ironic given the TN Titans and all, and she would have no idea that connection, given she is five.

Back on topic, I gotta ask around and see if any farmers are having ground hog problems and want them taken out!  I would love to pick off some groundhogs at 200yds or so with the 6.5G!!

Curly,

My wife doesn't like me killing the groundhogs.  This one she doesn't know about.  Since I've lived here, I've only shot two.  She's not an animal activist, but she's right in saying if you have no good reason to kill them, then it's not right.  Where I shot him there is no farming going on so they aren't a threat to the safety of the farmer on his tractor or livestock breaking their legs in a hole.

I shot him merely for a test of the cast bullet and that I got.  Like I said the bullet are too hard, there was no expansion what so ever....just like a FMJ.

I think if this year permits me, I'm going to take a bear with the 6.5.  Jacketed bullet in this case.  I may pop a deer with a cast round that I have made changes to insure some expansion.
