there has been a few posts along these lines lately.  I called DPMS about something else but asked about this.  The answer is worth sharing.

Every rifle has 10 rounds fired through it at the factory. Any that have an error are worked on.  He then went directly to ammo.  he said the LR308 is a precision rifle, not a "military, will run on anything you feed it" Like a FAL or AK.

He named several types of ammo, including SA that should be avoided due to variations. He said lake city is fine.

As mil surp ammo is so prolific with users on the board I wanted to share this.

Oh, he strongly discouraged polishing the chamber for concerns that opening it up will affect accuracy.

So I guess what I take from this is that if you are having problems buy a box of Remington and see if that helps. If not then call them.

Makes sense.

Buy a "Porche" and put reg unleaded and it will run like crap.

I paid $1400.00 for my 308 and I am not about to put some cheap ammo that I "found at a gunshow and the guy selling it said it was good".

Ammo is one of the biggest causes of problems for AR style rifles.

Thank you for sharing, and that was the same response Jason had wrote to me when I asked a simiular question in the Industry Forum.  IMO for those who like it tight, chamber polishing should be last ditch effort.  I would rather run a couple of hundred rounds through it first, for all guns need break in time.  If problems still persist off to the manufacture.  Knock on wood, mine's been very very good to me.

A minor polish job will not hurt accuracy.  If the chamber is a little rough its good to smooth the high spots.  If done aggressively however it is a definate BAD thing.

Has anybody tried the .308 Port Surplus in a LR-308?  I know that most surplus is to be avoided, but I've always found the port to be good stuff.

I've shot Port, Chec, Argentiine, Aussie, LC, Win white box, Remington FMJ, Winchester Fail safe, Hornady TAP with no failures in 3500rds. All six 19rd mags work great. I would never get into polishing the chamber and voiding the warrenty on your $1400.00 rifle, leave it to the experts. More damage has been done with a dremel than most peoples rifles.

I am not advocating using a dremel.  My LR didn't need anything but I have had rifles that needed the chamber polished.  By all means if your rifle needs the chamber to be polished take it to a competent smith with the correct tools for the job.

I don't think its the ammo. I just shot 2 boxes of Hornady match grade 165gr. I had about 6 FTE's. I think its shot better with some Winchester soft points I bought at walmart.
