| I was looking at a DPMS .308 at a local dealer today and the salespeson said I would have to only use ammo marked .308 Win not .308 /7.62 NATO. Is he right? |

Mine has had trouble with failures to extract (where the extractor slips off the rim and the brass is stuck in the chamber). DPMS .308 AP4 16" barrel Ammo that works: American Eagle .308, South African 7.62x51 surplus, Winchester .308 FMJ, other quality factory .308 ammo, Wolf .308, Portuguese surplus Ammo that does not work: Malaysian .308 surplus, sometimes Argentine .308 surplus, HSM .308 reloads (crap ammo) |
My understanding has always been you can shoot 7.62X51 mm ammo in a .308 rifle, but .308 ammo in a 7.62X51 mm rifle doesn’t work as well. My gun had a tight chamber and required polishing. Before polishing I put the ammo in I turned the barrel on its back it would not slide out. After polishing the bullet slides out. |

Other than the redius at the body - shoulder junction there is no difference in outer dimensions between the 7.62 and 308, either cartridge should work fine. If the extractor is riding over the rim but yet the case will fall out when you open the bolt with little or no effort it is more tham likely a timing issue. Whereas the the case is still under pressure when the bolt is releasing and the extractor rides over the rim (in semi's). The timing issue can be caused by powder with a burn rate not suited for the round. That is why different results with different manufacturers. Art - SSA |

I got a note in the box of mine saying South African was not recommended for it. But I shot some fine. I have used mostly lake city suplus, never a mis-fire. The sniper rounds from lake city are too long for the mag, or at least the ones I had were, I had to single feed, but they fired and ejected fine. But I am probably going to buy a couple cases of WWB andsell my various surplus and just shoot one round, well except for hunting, then re-zero on some good hunting stuff. I do recommend the LR-308 for what that s worth. |
