Does this forward assist actually function? I haven't had a chance to see one, but it was reported that the bolt carriers are not milled and that the forward assist did not function???? They look odd to me. Please clear this up for me.

The bolt carriers do not have the notches in them like the AR15 does, so therefore it dosent work. However if the bolt stops about 1/4 from closind you can hit the fordward asst and it will close the bolt. I have never used a fordward asst. on any rifle so it does not matter so much to me.

The forward assist pawl hits on the step-up on the bolt carrier. It will not function to close the bolt on a dirty chamber the way the AR fwd assist is designed, but it will allow you to ride your bolt forward and finish placing it into battery if you need to do so quietly in a tactical or hunting situation. It is the only big bore AR to have a fwd assist.

Thanks for the link. I overlooked this thread.

Yes, the bolt on the DPMS .308 with forward assist does have slots...same as a 5.56 AR with forward assist...its appearance is identical, merely larger.  Also, the bolt on my .308 is either chromed or nickle finished...not black.

Bushman,
How is it that your's has the slots and no one else's has them?  DPMS says that they do not offer milled carriers.

Just looked at two new AP-4 .308's at a gun show. Both had smooth carriers.
