| Hey guys. I'm new to ARs, but i've been snooping around this forum for a couple of months now and I think i've learned a lot. I do have a question or two though. Is there any reason why i shouldn't get a 6.8 as my first AR? I have been looking at the RRA 6.8 A4 and really think the input about RRA has been very positive from what i've read here. Second, does anyone make a quality 12.5" 6.8 barrel other than Noveske? I'm looking to buy soon and the more I try to convince myself to get a 5.56 first, the more I want a 6.8. Any advice would be most appreciated |
If it were my money....I would opt for the tried and true calibers...223,.308 and hold off on the 6.8 and see where that goes...There has been alot of hype on the 6.8 lately and I dont know anyone that has one or has shot one yet so it may all be just hype to try and stimulate market intrest.AR's are now bein made in more calibers than ever before and there are alot of brands to choose from too.I work hard for my money just like the next guy....So for me to plunk down my cash on something that is gonna die off in 3 yrs or so just dont make sense.Last I heard there are only 2 companies makin 6.8 ammo....The others have yet to commit to it. In my case I opted for a DPMS LR 308....And I havent regretted it for a sec. |
Remington Silver State Armory Hornady Thompson Center Barret AR15.com scuttlebutt that Black Hills is about to offer 6.8 ammo also eta...I doubt Barrets loading their own and I do not know about Thompson Ctr either but their 6.8 ammo is on the market. not counting BH, thats more than 2 companies for factory ammo..as the Teach posted its a hand/reloaders dream. Thats where most of the loading info has come from...Kudos to Zak Smith and all the others leading the way developing load info |

Southpaw, I should have used the term publicity rather than "hype". I agree the 6.8 is a handloader/reloaders dream... and from the looks of the numbers a very effective deer dropper. By my comment of "see where that goes"...Well,it would be awesome to see a Browning Bar ,Benelli R1,Ruger Mini in 6.8.... Why should this round be limited to AR's??? Yeah I am sure someone somewhere has a custom bolt gun in 6.8 that lights a matchstick from 300yrds....aint me...my pockets aint that deep, and my aquaintence to those whose pockets are is ...well limited at best. Seriously...Thank You for enlightening me about the ammo makers. I wasnt aware of the existance of Silver State Armory,or of the knowledge of Barret and T/C marketing ammo....This is useful to know in the event of running out of Brand X. and gives me something more to try out in my AR. Rem and Horn were the only ones I knew about and at (get those rolling eyes ready) the time of G&A Annual Mag release they only ran 2 brands,2 loads from Rem,1 from Hornady. So...Safe or not I am only comment on what I know. I dont take everything the mags put out as gospel...but...having used Hornady and Remington ammo if a mag is using that brand.....if anything would be safe to take as gospel that would be. I only hide in a a limited number of places...Under the hood of Freightliners,Peterbuilts and Kenworths...and the Northwestern Woods of Wisconsin using my AR to drop deer and my flyrod for some Rainbows....None of these places are beneficial for collecting info on or about AR's.And these are even harder places to find a newer ammo caliber. Hence...the reason for joining an AR forum. Thanx Again 308 Panther Shooter |
