here's what i've read on this cartridge.  it's a .308 win shortened .100 in and loaded with "special" powder that is a blend with 15% nitro.  the same type of stuff hornady uses in thier Light Magnum loads.  tests have it around 3050 fps with a 150gr bullet.  i don't really see the point, especially if you're a reloader.  this "special" powder is not and will not be available to the public anytime soon, if ever.  and i've read the cartridges will be around $30/20rds.

but back on topic here--i guess it would fit in a .308 platform AR, but why??

i knew that it was a .308 that wa shortened, but i didnt know by how much.  i guess i was just wanting to see if they shortend it enough to fit in the ar-15 plate form.  but if its only shortend by .100" of an inch, its still to long.   tank you for the info though.  brian

The full length 308 will actually fit in the AR-15 as was shown by the folks at MGI (at SHOT 07 they had the prototype lower that takes M14 mags sitting out center stage).  The real issue is that normal AR15 bolts will not withstand the rigors of firing 308 Win ammunition.  The larger rim with the high pressure will lead to lug failure.  The only way to avoid this is to lower the pressure or to reduce the rim size (or both). (That, or design a whole new bolt from the ground up)

As the 30 TC has the standard 308 rim, it would spell disaster for the AR15 bolt, as this special powder is likely to put quite some back pressure on the bolt.  I would give it one round before the lugs fail ...

If the large rim and high preasures ar the only downfall to the ar-15 platform, how are they able to build and shoot the .223-6.5 WSSM rounds through them? Just wondering because it would sell like hell if the 30 T/C, with the power of the 30-06, would work in a normal ar-15. Also, I think the new 450 Bushmaster uses a short .284 Win. brass.

NORMAL AR15 bolts will not handle the pressure of the WSSM cartridges either.  i seriously doubt that anyone will produce a 30 TC AR15 on a 223 platform.  as i stated before, the performance from these rounds is ONLY available from factory rounds, and can NOT be duplicated by Joe Reloader.
I really doubt a 30 TC AR15 would "sell like hell" because of these issues.

but of course, i could be wrong--john

The Oly WSSM uppers use completely redesigned parts, including the bolt, carrier, magazine and upper receiver.  These parts may LOOK like standard AR-15 parts but are more like AR-10 parts in size.  No reverse compatibility to either platform...

Higher velocity out of a 16" barrel than a 308.

if that's all you want, .300 saum and wsm both offer nearly 3000fps, and do it with cheaper factory ammo, plus you can duplicate these loads on your own bench!

I agree.

The only benefit I can see is the case demensions of the 30TC would offer more reliable feeding.

308 works just fine for me.
