Hi, First post for me. I seem to be having a problem with my Hornady seating die leaving a deep mark on the Hornady V-max bullet. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm using 29 grains of H322 and it is compacting some, but seating pressure doesn't seem to be to high. Is this dangerous? Will it affect accuracy? |
| Heli, The bullet seating stem within the die is not conforming to the shape of your bullet. This means that it only contacts the bullet tangentially, hence the ring. It is a beauty mark and being concentric will not affect accuracy. But if it deforms the bullet then it might affect the structural integrity of the bullet and maybe accuracy as well at that point. |
| I experienced the same problem using the redding competition seat die. The shape of the bullet and the shape of the seat plug just are too different and it leaves too little contact area between the two surfaces and hence leaves the ring. Actually if you are going for all out accuracy, it will mess things up, because the length of the loaded cartridges will not be very consistent. I bought the RCBS competition seat die and the surfaces mate perfectly and no more ring. Seating depth also became much more consistent. |
