A quick question for the knowlegdeable ones here. I have a Colt factory 7.62 upper, flat top with removable carry handle. Does anyone know what year Colt started making them? I bought it used and I'm curious about it's age.

Somewhere in this maze there is a thread with Colt serial numbers including years of manufacture for the 7.62 x 39.  It may be "Google-able"  if not a part of AR15.com.  The upper you have is a wonderful addition to the AR system.  Extremely accurate and reliable with proper magazines.  I use my 16" for light hunting and fun shooting.  It's also a great ladies and kids learning rifle... low felt recoil.  Good luck and enjoy.

The Colt Ser No: can as well help with the ID of pre/post band info.

Unfortunately the serial number info won't help as I purchased the upper only.

Sorry, but you are right.  I missed that point, but I do remember reading months ago something about the manufacturing being in the late 80's eary 90's.  One date that seams to stick in my mind was 1994.

I will look for additional informatin that I may have saved on our Colt 7.62x39 AR-15s.

PS:  When Colt cut loose with this modle, it was without the lowers if I remember right.
