I have a Lee auto prime handtool, http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=807875

What is the appropriate Auto Prime shellholder for the .50 Beowulf?

I am just getting into loading the Beowulf.

It's the one for 7.62x39, but you're (probably) going to have to do some filing on your hand prime tool because of the Beowulf's rebated rim.

I read about that somewhere.  At least the dremel tool will make it work or ruin it.

Thanks.

If it does, buy the RCBS hand primer to replace it and use standard shell holders without the need for modification.

Yes, either modify the Lee, get the RCBS handpriming tool, or get a RCBS Autoprime thing for your press or bench mounted.  I had that autoprime thing kicking around that I had never bothered to set up, cause I like the Lee and RCBS handtools just fine.  When I got the Beowulf going for reloading, I realized I could not use the LEE without modification.  So I fired up the autoprime and now I use it for .45, .50, .30-06, .45-70, etc, etc.  Now I need to find my #4 shellholder for .223.  Not sure where it is...

If the Beowulf is the .223/5.56 case opened to .50, why wouldn't a .223/5.56 shell holder work?

It would if it was, but it's not so it won't.

So it is an entirely new cartridge, no ancestry to .223 at all?

The rim diameter is set at 0.445" diameter and is common with that of the 7.62x39.

The cartridge shares no common parentage with the 5.56 but is closer to the 50 AE although it is somewhat longer at 1.650"

I have the 458 socom and you have to do the same thing for the Lee - it works just fine.  It aint pretty, but it works real good.
