I need to lighten up my 24" DPMS 308, I had a 10 mile hike tracking a deer this weekend and it was not fun. Thinking about starting with a FF.........Any ideas.

Have your tube vented.

If you take you tube off and hold it you will see that it doesn't weigh that much at all. venting the tube is a good idea but if you really want to reduce the weight then want you should do is have the barrel fluted.

If you are really serious check out Advanced Barrel Systems Inc. They can turn your barrel down and wrap it in carbon fiber. I haven't heard anything about this outfit one way or the other, but I'd love to try out one of their barrels. I really don't think you will lose a discernable amount by changing the float tube though.

When I had my DPMS barrel fluted the guy at DPMS said it takes off about a 1.5 lbs, thats if it is fluted the way DPMS does it.

having my barrel fluted is deffinetly on my list of tricks

I recently found this company with carbon fiber free floats..........kinds cool, kinda light.

Nope.

There's only one aftermarket tube available for the DPMS .308 right now, and it's at least as heavy as the stock one.
