Is it acceptable to take a few coils out of the safety selector detent spring to allow for easier operation?

How hard is it to actually move, it is suppose to be firm and they wear after a bit of time, most of them work into then gun so they work smoothly.

Personally, the safety selector is the last thing I would modify.

It will wear itself in as stated. And you may end up with a selector that just flops around.

Put a dab of grease on the switch and detent.

Also, I have tried some steel detents (cheapies) that would bind. Some were profiled to a sharp point.
Blunting the end and rounding them slightly  seemed to help.

Good luck.

I'd like to pile in on this thread for some input. Recently put a Damage Industries 45 degree short throw safety in a pistol lower I've had sitting around. Old safety moved easily with positive engagement at either position. New safety moved freely in receiver without spring/detent, but is VERY stiff, to the point of being difficult, when installed. Spring at quite a bit of grease on it, but still wondering if maybe I shouldn't clip a coil.

All of the rifles I build and the ones that I have bought are stiff when they start out, but I always shoot a few hundreds rounds through them before I start thinking about or doing any small modifications such as the clipping of the springs, by shooting them, you are allowing the parts to start seating and wearing into what will become a normal fit between those parts.

Thank you all for your input.  I replaced the original selector with a 60 degree SI ambi unit, but did not replace the original detent and spring.  The SI unit is much stiffer to operate that the original. Did apply grease to detent area, but it remains difficult to operate. Easy to flip to fire, but quite hard to return to safe.  From your inputs, i would imagine it will loosen up with use and time.
