I recently purchased a Omega Mfg Keymod Free Float handguard. After I received the item and unpacked it I began assembly and started installing the barrel nut. I reached 30# of torque and blew out the side wall on the nut. Since it was blown I then tried a couple of the other holes in other areas of the nut away from the first "blowout" and experienced the same results. The barrel nut seems to be made from either aluminum or "pot metal" for lack of a better word. Is this a common experience and expectation for future builds or what are the others results in this area. I would have thought the material the nut was constructed from would be able to hold up to the 30# torque. I did check the torque to ensure it was set to the proper specs and that the 30# was what was being delivered. Any thoughts or suggestions for future reference?

I will have to get one later. I am not at the shop.

I just did the samething. Blew out 3 sets of holes. My wrench is the 2 pin type. I think the biggest reason was getting off center, my fault. Using the wrench with a break bar will give a lot more control with two hands and two leverage points. I managed to salvage my mangled nut, debating on whether I should bother replacing it.

I'm sorry, but what did you expect out of a $50-$60 cheapo handguard?

Next time, spend a little more and buy from somewhere that has a reputation for quality.

How does a titanium GI barrel nut help someone who's having an issue with a FF handguard that uses a proprietary barrel nut?

Welp disregard... I've split a GI barrel nut before and this was my solution. Used it with a Fortis rail for a while.

I suppose it could happen, but I have never seen/heard of a GI bbl nut splitting. ???

You could see thread marks on it from the receiver threads. Either the nut or reciever threads were too large, cause it to bind and cut into the BN... So not so much a "splitting" in two. It wasn't bad but I didn't want to keep it on there.

I guess I expected a better quality barrel nut. The free float handguard is fairly nice. I guess a nut that was better quality was too much to ask for.

I also salvaged the busted nut. I was using a three pin wrench and also had a four pin and a five pin from other builds. It is what it is I guess.

This.  You get what you pay for.  The cheapest decent free floats are UTG Pro and ALG
