I'm trying to decide what handguard to use on the AR-15 I'm building. I want a free-floating handguard and I want it to be reasonably lightweight. I prefer MLOK over Keymod but won't rule out Keymod. Also, I don't want the diameter to be too large.......1.5" - 1.7" OD will suffice.
Once the above requirements are met, I'm particular how it mounts. I liked the Midwest Industries handguards but I don't want a handguard that is "glued" in place......gotta be something better than that. I really like the ALG Handguard and the mounting is nice; however, I don't like that it is a cylinder the entire length where it is not fitted to the receiver at all. Those gaps on the sides of the receiver look cheap in my opinion. So what would you recommend? Thanks for your suggestions! |

Midwest Industries Gen 3 M-Lok
You're welcome eta- You really should check them out. The whole "glued in place" schtick is a moot matter. They're clamped on and have an anti-rotation feature that also prohibits them from moving forward. While there may be "better" mounting designs, don't think that these are weak. I'm more than certain that the amount of force required to rotate/damage the rail will certainly result in damage to the gun that would put it out of service. |

I'm not doubting it will hold up but what if you need to remove it? Do you have to clean off the glue? Will new glue stick to the old glue? How big a hassle and mess would this be? That's what has me leary. Could you mount it without the glue? Of course the risk is on me then if I don't follow recommended mounting procedures. |

Not bad! I hope I won't need to spend this much. If possible, $200 or less would be ideal. Quoted:

Geissele Mk4 or Mk8 MLOK. Not bad! I hope I won't need to spend this much. If possible, $200 or less would be ideal. Trust me, they're worth it. One of the most bulletproof mounting systems I've ever used. Take a look in the EE for a used model if you're worried about cost, you should be able to find one at or under $200. |

Just picked up a new Geissele MK8 13" mlok for $205 on the EE
BCM KMR-A gets my vote too I've had 3 MI rails and never glued anything so IDK what that is about. The new Bootleg rails are pretty awesome. https://bootleginc.com/product/bootleg-handguard/ Other than all that I have C4 quad rails. |
| SLR Rifleworks makes some very solid handguards. Mounting system is fantastic and I think they look very sleek. I have two of those. LaRue rails are pretty nice if you are looking to get into quad rails. I was very hesitant to ever try quad rails because I was told that they were bulky. LaRue's rails feel great without any covers on them and fit my medium-large hands very well. |

So I'm confused. I've seen folks using a "glue" on the barrel nut before mounting MI handguards in YouTube videos. Is this not required or not required on some models? Thanks! Quoted:

Is this not required or not required on some models? Thanks! It's required by the installation instructions for the gen 3 handguards. Some people chose not to use it and the rail still stays in place apparently. I used the glue with mine and it seems more like a failsafe and it's easy to remove. I'm happy with it after about 500 rounds |

Did you need to remove the glue before adding new glue and reinstalling? |

I can't comment on how much it helps as I haven't used the rail without it. |
