What makes it better than a forged milspec receiver other than looks?
"The MUR was developed to give the customer a Mil-Spec correct upper receiver with a thicker wall, making the MUR upper receiver a stronger platform. This more rigid upper receiver will increase accuracy and reliability, while extending the life of the interfacing components."
IMO nothing. I have two, an early billet and a later forged. I see nothing about them that makes it worth the extra money. They do look nice but that counts for little to me. Stiffness? You can't find a stiffer upper than the DPMS Lo-Pro IMO, which I also have. Anymore, the only uppers I use are Aero Precision. They give me everything I want or need, and as far as I am concerned, they look as good as any.

This above ... plus as a southpaw shooter, I run AXTS ambi-CH's on all my Vltor upper rigs using my right hand. Having the forward assist positioned closer to the ejection port on MUR's and VIS' gives me more room to manipulate and not snag my index finger on the top ridge of forward assist, as opposed to a standard M4 forged upper. |
I had to lap both of mine. The billet was no more square than the forged and neither was any better than any other upper I have used, including Aero, Spikes, BCM, and DPMS. I think the 'out of squareness' comes from the anodizing, not the machining on any of them.
