| I am rebuilding my 10.5" AR and want to keep things short. I am looking for a short muzzle break or flash hider. I'm just not sure what is out there. I am looking at the Rainer Arms Mini Comp, or the AAC single chamber break. Are there any short flash hiders? Breaks are insane on 10.5" guns. |

Just a quick thought, Griffin Arm..
It's designed for cans, but has a thread protector to cover them up. Not sure you would get much shorter. ETA: or a standard A2. Those area cheaper. |

If you shoot at indoor ranges, don't be *that* guy who uses a muzzle brake. Stick with flash suppressors. The standard A2 is cheap and great. I have never been to an indoor range. I don't even have to shoot at a public range... |

This, even if you are like me and own enough land for your own private range. I have brakes only on heavy recoil magnum rifles. Better than the A2 is another good cheap flash hider (that short barrel will really belch flames in low light) that is inexpensive and performs well in comparison, always in the top group, the $25-30 YHM 5C2. It also provides a little mitigation of muzzle rise as there is no bottom port. |
I have the Rainier Mini comp on my 11.5 and it's not bad for the shooter (when outdoors) but it's rather obnoxious for others standing around. Indoors can be brutal for everyone.
If your point isn't to make a fire breathing boom stick, get a flash hider. The flash cans are pretty good at directing the blast forward but do not reduce muzzle flash. |
| I know what it is like to have a break on a short AR. I have an M4-2000 so I had an AAC Breakout on it before. Ideally I want an Mini 4, but that is not going to happen anytime soon. So I just want to keep it short. Ill give the A2 a shot. I do like the looks of the Mini Comp though. |

I'm going through this myself. Mine is a 11.5" pistol (although, because I just can't leave anything alone, I'm thinking about having Adco shorten it to 10.3" or 10.5", but I digress...)
I recently tried a few devices. I used the same pistol for each device. Ammunition was Federal XM193 and XM855. Shooting was done at late dusk (about 10 pm). I was on a covered outdoor range. A2: short and cheap. The worst offender. I got bright white flash about every second or third shot. The fireball was watermelon-size. A1: short and cheap. I still got bright white flash about every second or third shot. The fireball was not quite as large as with the A2 (but close). Think in terms of a smaller watermelon. AAC Blackout (non-mount version): not short, not cheap. I got flash every shot, but it was only about the size of a grapefruit and a dull orange color. It was not distracting at all. Black River Tactical Covert Comp: shorter than the AAC Blackout and just a little longer than the A1/A2, as expensive as the AAC Blackout non-mount version. According to Black River's website, the Covert Comp provides the following benefits: The unique linear compensator design directs blast downrange and away from the shooter. It moderates felt recoil, allowing for faster follow up shots. It provides flash suppression nearly as good as the A2 style dedicated flash hider. My experience varied a bit. I didn't notice any difference in blast while using the Covert Comp. In fact, I didn't notice a difference in blast when shooting all four devices. Maybe they differ, but I didn't notice any difference. I felt more of a push to the rear.when using the Covert Comp. This makes sense. If you were to use this on a SBR, I would expect the shoulder to act as a pivot point and you would experience enhanced muzzle climb. Being a 5.56, the push wasn't problematic, but it was there. Flash wasn't as bad as I had expected. In fact, it might have been a little more suppressed than the A1. I haven't tried a flash can. I might try one of the KAK flash cans since they're reasonably priced, but those are pretty big devices and I'd be surprised if it had any meaningful blast reduction or suppressed flash better than the AAC Blackout. Since I couldn't tell any difference in muzzle blast amongst the devices and the AAC Blackout non-mount isn't obnoxiously long, I'm sticking with the AAC Blackout since it did the best at flash suppression (...and I already own it |

i prefer A1's or phantoms since they give a little better flash suppression in low light and i think A2's look weird with the closed bottom. Lots of great choices, but beware of any flash hider which does have an open bottom if you shoot prone. They throw up dirt and dust. Having a closed bottom does two things: First, it makes shooting prone a lot easier when shooting on bare ground or any surface that is not solid. Second, if the bottom is closed and the top port is true vertical, then you get some muzzle rise mitigation, which is a good thing. This is one of the design features of the newer current "enhanced" YHM 5C2 that I like. It is extremely effective in hiding flash, has a closed bottom, does not kick up dust and debris, and provides at least a little muzzle rise mitigation. And, of course it is just about the cheapest other than the A2. |
