Hello Gents,
Im looking to replace the hanguards on my middy. Ive narrowed it down to 3 options I like. 1. Midwest industries gen 2 drop in pic rails 2. Magpul SL middy handguards 3. B5 super slim poly keymod handguards I like all 3 of them as far as look and function. the only things I would be running on these handguards would be a flashlight on a cantilever mount, a BCM forward grip and the pressure pad for the flash light. If anyone owns any of these products and runs them in a similar fashion id like to hear your report on it. As always thanks Gents. |

I have the B5s on my BCM LW midlength, they're about as slim as you can get away with in a handguard. I think the heat shields would be touching the entire length of an HBAR profile barrel. On my pencil profile barrel the heat management isn't as good as std. or Magpul handguards, but not an issue if you're running any kind of angled or vertical grip. The heat isn't as bad as my PTR-32 or VZ-2008 though.
The Magpul midlength slim guards don't fit on triangular end caps, only round. So they wouldn't fit my BCM. And the majority of the midlengths I've seen like my RRA are all triangular, so unless you have round caps the magpul slim won't fit. The standard MOE handguards WILL fit, I run a set on a PSA carbine. They work fine, very good heat management. I looked closely at the MI super light rails, a nice product but more than what I wanted to spend. I'd spend that kind of money on FF rails but not drop ins. |

After years of using picatinny rails, I come to the general conclusion that it contains mostly unused space that could be better utilized with a firm grip and ease of slinging. With that said, my favorites are tubular designs (13-15 inches) with a full picatinny rail on top for sight and sling attachment followed by detachable side rails to attach devices such as a flash light. In the end you're left with a smooth profile that doesn't snag and easier to grip and closer to the barrel. Much easier to shoot, at least for me.
If you just want a flash light attached, and sight/sling attachment, then go with something low profile like a Troy Alpha rail or something slim like that. I think in the long run you'll be much happier because you can attach anything anywhere with minimal problems. Keymods are pretty cool as well. The way I see it the military uses a picatinny rail on all four sides because they don't know what or where a soldier might attach something so they have to accommodate everyone in a way that wouldn't cost them money or time. |
