I've never done this before so I figure I'd ask here to make sure. I want to change out my 16'' barrel for an 18'' one. I ordered a barrel and gas tube. So what other small parts to I need? What can't be reused from the old set up? And where's the best place to order them?

Thank you
Cody

You should have everything you need unless you have regular handguards. I'm assuming you are using some sort of free floating rail.

Do you have the tools that you need to do it? If your muzzle device is pinned on your old barrel you may need a new one.

I have a free floating hand guard now but that's getting replace by a new one.

I didn't know if you could reuse the barrel nut and rings.

Going with a different flash suppressor so that shouldn't be an issue.

I just finished my first upper build.  You'll need a couple other things:

Moly Grease for the Barrel and Barrel Nut

Set of Headspace Gages - these are for 5.56

You will probably need a tool to disassemble your bolt to check headspace.

The gas tube will come with a new pin.

Headspace is set with extension at the factory so if its wrong there is no way to fix it.

OP depending on the rail you plan to use you may need barrel shims to time the barrel nut.

True!  But if it's wrong, I wouldn't want to shoot it.

All the reading I've done here, one thing rings out:

Change your barrel OR your bolt - CHECK HEADSPACE,
