I have a Oly Arms K16 with the solid free float tube. Problem is, the handguard gets to hot to handle when dumping 2 or 3 mags rather quickly. I've been looking at ventilated handguards and the Hogue over molded hand guard. Will this solve my problem or must I get a vertical grip? I really don't care for the vertical grips but in a SHTF scenario a person may need to dump 100 rounds or more. What's the best way to deal with the heat?

thanks,
swampie

Vfg and gloves.  Quad rails have more surface area to dissipate the heat  that combined with a vfg will eliminate most of your heat issues

In before some one crys you are abusing the gun

Paracord wrap. Cheap, quick, and more effective than any other solution in my experience (I am a 3-Gunner living in AZ, so I know all about hot rifles). You are welcome.

Paracord wrap sounds fine but I'd also like a rail. So how about those ventilated handguards?

Larger diameter hand guard = further distance from hot parts.

Railed handguard with rail covers will fix the heat issue, but it adds bulk to the handguard.  I personally prefer to just throw a pair of gloves on.

The rifle is free floated, bull-barreled, non-chrome lined, probably for varmint or target use.  Why are you mag dumping it?

If you aren't using the rifle for intended purpose, sell the rifle or the upper, and get a more appropriate upper or rifle.  You don't have a rifle or hand guard problem.

No handguard will survive mag dumps. If you're in a situation where you're dumping 100 rounds or more I would question your life choices, not worrying about handguards.

Shoot less quickly and your handguards won't get hot.

It helps if you give us the WHOLE story when you ask a question.

In my experience, just about any handguard gets hot when you mag dump, and paracord is the only good solution I have found. If you just want to mount a BUIS or flashlight, you can buy a short section of rail and bolt it to your FF tube, then paracord the rest. Feel free to spend lots of $$$ on a rail system if that's what you are determined to do, but whichever you choose I guarantee it will still get hot.
