Hi all,
I have completed my first lower build and am looking for an upper. I would like to stick to around $500-600 for it complete w/ BCG. Suggestions? I would like to find a carbine with a mid length gas system. Does that exist? This will be used for HD, WHTF So I want to keep it light also. Thanks in advance. |

If you want to keep it light, stay away from gov't profile and stick with pencil/lightweight profile with a 0.625" gas block.
It is a serious use rifle, so you want something that at least meets the mil specs, if not exceeds them. BCM and PSA both have uppers that fit the bill. Anything from BCM is good to go, and PSA is good as long as you stick with their chrome lined uppers. Unfortunately it looks like PSA is out of stock on any of their lightweight 16" middys right now. That's OK, BCM is probably the better option anyway. I'd go with this BCM upper -- standard 16" mid length lightweight: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Mid-Length-LIGHT-WEIGHT-Upper-Receiver-p/bcm-urg-mid-16lw.htm Adding their BCG plus charging handle for $69 is a no brainer, and it comes with their Mod 0 compensator at no extra cost. If you slap some Magpul MOE slimline handguards or something on there, you can keep it in your price range. I have one of these uppers, and it is friggin fantastic. Dead nuts reliable, lightweight and great handling with the pencil barrel, and it even shoots inside of 2 MOA with XM193. It is good for consistent hits on torso targets out to 500 yards with iron sights co-witnessed through an Aimpoint, anyway. |

What would you think about a Windham or DPMS complete upper? I'm where the OP is, I put a lower together last night, and am wanting a good inexpensive upper for it. Speaking for myself? I'd much prefer the PSA Premium. Never had a problem with the 5 BCM uppers I own but they were expensive compared to PSA equivalents. If I had to go with either of the uppers you listed I'd take the Windham first.... |
