Does a barrel have to be dimpled to use a set screw gas block? I bought a radical firearms barrel and got one of the set screw gas blocks but the barrel is not dimpled. I want to use it but don't have tools to put the dimples in the barrel. Would this cause a problem down the line if it is not dimpled? Thanks in advance, RG.

I would suggest having the block pinned, or at the very LEAST dimple the barrel (there's no point in dimpling the barrel if you have it pinned).
For pinning, you can A) pay a ridiculous $120 or so to have it done, B) get a $65 jig and drill it yourself, C) get a $40 BRT MicroPin gas block (which has drill divot already in it) and drill it yourself. For options B and C, I'd suggest forgetting about using a taper pin (not necessary) and driving a 10c steel grooved type A dowel pin in there instead (these compress to fit and IMHO are WAY more secure than taper pins, plus they utilize a straight hole, so no reaming). Just my .02

It is not absolute but very very easy to do but, if required or suggested by the maker than yes, do it. There are also some nice set screws that will dimple certain barrel material available.

It is awfully easy to dimple a barrel without having to buy a dimple jig. Drill + bit and boom, done. Use some blue LT or Permatex on the threads.

I use a Noveske set screw gas block and I did not dimple the barrel. I've got close to 2,000 rounds through it now and it hasn't moved. Works for me.

Use a Knurled tiped set screw. They have sereations cut in to the point to keep them from loosing up.

Sounds good. I also talked with Radical Firearms today and they said since it is a semi press fit, I should be no problems.

FWIW, I used a BCM lo pro gas block on a build and the set screws had knurled tips (~$45) but I used a Larue LT202-1 lo pro gas block on my last build (~$69) and the set screws didn't have knurled tips. If you really want to be sure I'd call before ordering.

The gas block will be under a handguard, right? I wouldn't get too worked up about the set screw dimple then, nothing is going to be knocking that loose

Sounds good. That is what I have been reading. I will be swapping over to a seekins rail instead of the dd. Mid length from a carbine. It will always be covered. Just trying to make sure. I will go ahead and put on some light locktite. Should build it up tomorrow.

Mc Master sells them. They are under cup category. You might be able to find them at a fastner supply house if you live in a larger city.
