What advantages do these receivers have over traditional ones?

How many of you guys use them in your build (Home Defense, hunting, etc.)?

And if you do use one, what are your experiences with it?

Thank you

P.S.: Part of the reason is that I'm thinking about using this in my next build: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XANA3LWT&name=Anderson+Manufacturing+Lightweight+Sport+AR+Upper&groupid=587

I have the same upper on a 6.5 Grendel. I had a tolerance stacking issue with it on an aero blemished lower. Using it on a spikes lower cleared that problem right up.

I got it because it was cheap and because it looked different. I wanted something that would say. "Hey, this is not a regular 223 caliber rifle! Do not feed it as such." The project was something of a series of coincidences. A cobbling together of various random parts. If my 6.5 had a purpose I would say it is 87% for fun with long range shooting. 13% For hunting. If I ever go hunting. I do not intend to use it for self defense, I could. But I just finished a purpose built rifle for that. Though I must say the 6.5 does have much better knockdown power than typical 62 grain ball.

To be honest I don't like how it looks and I would prefer to have a dust cover. But other than that it has worked well so far. The upper was very reliable with the spikes lower until my extractor snapped last weekend. A not uncommon occurrence with 6.5s I am told. Certainly not the fault of the upper.

Unlike some people I actually use my forward assist from time to time. Though never to force a round into a dirty chamber. I kind of miss having one.

As for advantages? I suppose they are a bit lighter but probably not by much. Simpler, but I have never heard of a forward assist causing malfs. If I pick up a bolt and extractor I can completely trust I might rebuild the 6.5 with a standard upper and a much lighter fore-end. Then put a 556 barrel on the slick side upper and sell it at a gun show or something.

I have a strong preference for uppers without the forward assist. And yes forward assists do malfunction. When they do they are difficult to clear.

Ah yes I was wondering about that. I would imagine that if one malfunctioned it would be quite the headache.

I put a Spike's Tactical Slick Side Upper on a build for my girlfriend.  My motivations were #1 simplification (less buttons, use the charging handle) and #2 weight reduction (minimal but measurable).

I've used a couple of those Anderson uppers with no issues.

Weight savings with no FA or dust cover assembly is just a couple-few  grams short of 2oz. Or 1/8lb(sounds better). Yes, indeed measurable imo.

Fwiw, I've had a slick sided SP1 since 78. Prolly has approx 12+k thru it to date, doing all kinds of activities. Have had zero malfunctions from it thru all those yrs.

Also have a newish build using an Anderson LW upper(no FA, no dust cover), on a LW 16" 1-4 scoped carbine build. Works fine so far.

For a go-to slick sided SHTF rifle,  I'd personally like a dust cover in place, and wish someone would make a more mainstream, easily avail, inexpensive, with dust cover....slick sided upper (Anderson maybe?). I think it'd sell, to both the retro crowd, but also toward some contemporary builds.

I bought one of those Anderson's for a lightweight build. I prefer slicksides with provisions for a dust cover, and no FA or case deflector. Those are harder to find.
I just got a 9mm upper back from ADCO to use on a 5.56 project.

I think this is what you are looking for. This is what I was originally going to put on the 6.5 but the Anderson one was slightly cheaper.

I can't find it right now, but there was a thread about Aero making the uppers without forward assist and no Brunton bump but with a port door.  They had even posted a picture of one they did make but then nothing else happened.

I ended up finding CMT 9mm uppers on Gunbroker.  I used them for 9mm and 22LR builds.  I have been pleased with them.

This!

Nowadays slick sides are more a preference IMO. As well as for the guys that like ultra light builds.

Geez! $220. Might as well get a 2A. Are there any without FA that have the port door provision that are inexpensive?

None. That, and the shell deflector are the only reason I won't buy a 2A. Well that, and the fact that they weight the same, or maybe a little more than the Aero slick side. But are 3 to 4 times more expensive..

Is one in 250k a particularly damning failure rate?

No, it is not.  But it is an interesting idea.

I tend to think that you should have as few things to break as possible.

The Quentin Defense slick side is billet and beautifully built.  I have one on my SPR with their billet lower and its a fantastic setup.  But being billet it wasn't done for light weight.

But pretty heavy, comparatively speaking.
